WooCommerce vs Shopify

I am looking to develop an ecommerce revenue stream, with a drop shipping arrangement. I have done some research but I am now wrestling between Woocommerce and Shopify. Can any one that has used both give me some incite?
 
Advertise on BHW
WooCommerce if you have back-end knowledge, want to customize your store to a greater extent.
Shopify if you don't have any back-end knowledge and want to start with campaigns straight away.
 
As AryabhattZero said, WooCommerce it's more customizable but a bit more difficult than Shopify.
 
Thanks for the responses. I am pretty good with the back end stuff and I do like the idea of more customization. Would the Woo Commerce solution be cheaper in the long run?
 
If I were to build an e-commerce site for a client, would WooCommerce or Shopify be better in terms of security? I don't want to be held liable if their site gets hacked or something

Yes, WooCommerce would be substantially cheaper unless you bought some intense hosting for a startup eCommerce store.

Unless you were truly careless or doing custom coding, I don't see how you would be held liable for a security problem. If you want to avoid all possible liability, then I suppose Shopify would be the way to go.
 
its depends on your budget, every platform has cons and pros...

i dont have any experience in woo/shopify but after reading some dropship journey using shopify if u use shopify payment gateway its take time to cash out the money (around 10 days), so u need to have enough cash flow for ads and order the item :D
 
Shopify always comes out looking more professional for me

Well her I go. Thanks for all of the input, it really helped me get started. I have decided to go WooCommerce as I have a lot of development experience and it looks like I can build a better looking site. Wish me look and I will let you know how things progress.
 
Using both Shopify and WooCommerce is very easy, even for a complete beginner.

Both platforms have an intuitive user interface for simple tasks like creating a site’s basic pages (contact, privacy policy, etc), listing products, checking/fulfilling orders, and more. These setup processes are relatively hassle-free.

Both platforms have thorough documentation and a large user base, which means finding answers to potential issues that may arise is fairly effortless in both systems.
The biggest difference between the two is in the setup. WooCommerce is a plugin for WordPress which means you need a WordPress website for which you have to pay a hosting fee, install the WooCommerce plugin, and then setup the store. However, if you already have an existing WordPress website, setting up WooCommerce is an easy process.

Shopify, on the other hand, is a self-hosted solution which means you don’t have to worry about finding a web host, installing a separate content management system, and then adding Shopify. If you have no technical skills or if you are starting from scratch, Shopify is probably the easier choice. On top of that, Shopify comes with integrated blogging capabilities meaning you won’t lose out just because you haven’t gone the WordPress route.

Personally i'm using Shopify as front-end and i've codded my own backend that shopify talks to to get all the updates.
You can't bit shopify's templates and UI/IX .
 
Hey guys, sorry for interrupting the thread, but I keep searching on the payment system or set-up for my woocommerce here, can't find one.

Are you using plugins? I am not fully a back-end dev so I am doing the hard way now since I enjoy learning it and want to code on my own.

My question is I don't know how to integrate payment system yet, any thread recommendations here so I'll get into the right track.

I always go with WooCommerce because I use WP all the time and you can get a much better looking site if you know what you're doing, not to mention there is so much info out there on everything WP related that you can customise it to do everything you imagine. Plus it's free.

Shopify is only popular because it's easy for noobs to use. I personally just hate it.
 
  • Woocommerce is easy to use and to start up
  • Woocommerce is user friendly
  • Woocommerce has plugins to extend functionality
BUT
  • Woocommerce can get unmanageable and bulky with all the plugins
  • Plugins have to be compatible with everything else you are using
  • Not good for very large web shops

Shopify is the opposite and its good for small and large shops
  • Easy to use
  • User friendly
  • Scalable
  • Plugins to extend
BUT
  • Customisation can get complicated especially heavy custom features
 
This all depends on how much your trying to spend to set things up and how quickly you want it done.

Woocommerce is FREE
Woocommerce is highly customizable
Woocommerce has a ton of free plugins
Pro Woocommerce plugins & themes are fairly inexpensive and generally a one time payment (not shopify)
Woocommerce can be as simple or complex as you want it
You own ALL your Woocommerce assets in case you want to ever sell your site.

Shopify is easy to get started, but you have that monthly payment
Shopify plugins are almost always on a monthly payment plan. Themes are VERY expensive as well.
Shopify dictates what you can sell on your store to some degree (Woo has no restriction)
You don't actually own your Shopify store, you rent it. In case you ever want to sell your business, you're SOL.

Just a few things to think about. Give Woocommerce Academy (http://woocommerceacademy.com) a shot if you're looking for a one stop shop type of deal.
