Without any Link Building

Over the years I've noticed they provide less and less power.

They are still relevant in 2021 though, they do still have quite a lot of weight to them, but remember backlinks are not the only ranking factor, which means you can still get traffic without any.

Building links is always an option if you want to speed up the process.
You don't need to build if you know exactly what to do + quality content.
If you have good content, links will come along.
It's pretty simple...

Anyway, in most cases unfortunately link-building is done just so they can say "hey, I've done this and it's not working."
In 99% people have 0% of quality content and expect some miracle to happen.

totally agree. different niches, different algorithm. It seems google AI is learning on what to do on different niches. it looks at collective sites for a niche and determines what degree of each ranking element it should use.

Anyway, it is not impossible, but I doubt you will be able to rank in any half decent niche without any links.
In the best case you will rank for keywords that no one else has decent content.
