windows 7 worth it?

hi, i've just seen i can get the official windows 7 professional version in my uni's msdn store for free. it's not an RC version or some shit.

My question is, Is it worth it?

right now I am running Vista, never installed the friggin RC to test what's new and stuff.

anyone can give some oppinions?

right now i am virus-free and stuff, but my disc is full of shit, i might think about cleaning up a bit.

all ive been hearing is good things about it and am actually holding out to get a new quad core with it already installed, i dont want the new pc to be even tainted by vista in anyway! lol
 
it's kinda all pro's from vista and xp together? more efficient than vista, more secure then xp?
 
I've been using it for a while now. Works flawlessly, 5x better than Vista no doubt. Way faster, better looking, vista looks with XP speed. I have actually increased productivity by using windows 7 as apposed to Vista.
 
anyone knows if i can burn a dvd ( 2.7gb ) to a double layer dvd? without getting problems? ( it's the win install disk )
 
A fellow Blackhatter who shall remain anonymous just went through a weekend of hell getting his system back after Windows 7 crashed on him. I wanted it too, but now I'm just hangin' loose with Vista until the bugs get worked out on 7.
 
Got to say that I have been using Windows 7 on my laptop etc since beta came out - as soon as the retail hit my MSDN account I have been running that.

Best version of Windows yet, and that comes from a die hard XP fan!

he was using some RC or kinda "cracked version"?

Cause the one i got is official so i even could update myself on windows update.
 
I can tell you that it doesn't seem to like linksys routers, or at least mine, a wrt300n(which is a crappy router anyways), and dd-wrt custom firmware. I lose my Internet connection intermittently through the day, and XP and VISTA never gave me issues like this.

BUt everything else, I love Win 7 ;) especially the task bar.

Yep, exactly the same happened to me, machine crashed and then would'nt boot, took me the best part of 2 days to get straight again, good job I'd backed up the important stuff on an ex HD, if you are going to install do it on a fresh hd, it'll save you a lot of grief.
 
i got myself back up's from my important stuff. if something goes wrong or i don't like it, i'd just use the recovery partition ( notebook ) so i'd be on vista quite quickly again.

i've used some tool to see compatility it said there're some driver issues, but i'd just need to get an update there.

gonna try it out. we'll see what's going on then. i can report back here, for anyone who's interested. just burning the disc hopefully it doesn't go wrong with double layer, and then gonna have a quick start on this.

else anywanys i'll be back on the run in about an hour all is good.

else it'll take approx 2 hours to get vista back on the run.
 
I kinda like vista now i'm used to it but liked xp pro better.
Going to migrate to 7 but that'll have to be a clean install
otherwise it'll just be sitting ontop of vista and defeating
the purpose of the upgrade.
 
Hey man I used to have access to the MSDNAA while I was at Uni and there was a little bug in it that basically gave you access to as many serial numbers (LEGIT!!) as you wanted but only once per product. You could do it with all your mates accounts as well though. I don't know if this still works but if you want to try it I would love a serial if it still works ;)

Basically what you need to do is go through the steps to order it and then when you get to the stage of checkout (exact page is forgotten cos this was years ago) where you get your serial number and just refresh the page. It used to rotate serial numbers almost indefinitely (never got more than 10 but I heard some people got more). I had so many legit serials for XP pro it was silly.

If you wanna try this out you could do it on another app that you could get for free that uses serials and check if it works. When it worked for us we could get as many serials as we wanted for any app.

Just to answer anyone who may ask yes these serials worked with WGA and gave access to all support and were recognised as completely legit serials. Let me know how it goes.
 
Do you all have a reason not to use XP ?

Major releases:
There was win95 .. it was unstable
Then came win98, it was more stable but still had lots of issues
Win2000 was the first pretty stable release (let's ignore NT for now)
XP is Windows 2000 together with a (stupid) changed frontend, more recent bugfixes.
XP already has some pretty bad features but it's not too annoying.

After XP we had a bunch of stupid variants .. none of them bring anything we need.
Vista was the peak of stupidness, slowish, heavy memory usage, lots of useless crap and it introduced a lot of software incompatibility.

No one wants Vista, even businesses use XP as it's stable, more lightweight and doesn't have all those features that steal your time.

Microsoft realiced Vista is a fiasco, so they make something total NEW.
They take Vista, change it's modelling. Add a few features, remove a few features and to make clear it is not Vista they call it "Windows 7.0".

Now what do you get ? You get Vista + a bunch of features you don't want.

Use XP .. it's faster and got everything you need from an operating system. (already much more than most people actually want but not as shitty as vista or windows 7.0)
 
Window's 7 is not Vista Revamped. Its Mac type operating system, which does not have the typical window's startup programs. Therefore making it faster and more stable, you run what you want to run. Nothing More.
 
I've never bought a OS without buying a new computer so won't be getting Windows 7 until I get a new laptop later this year or next year.
 
Good timing for this thread, since I downloaded and installed an OS other than XP for the first time in many, many years. So far, I love it! It's actually more productive. Copying and pasting files is faster than ever before, searching for stuff is incredible fast, and it's got very sleek, better than Vista-like looks.

I LOVE the slideshow background feature! It's extremely cool. Definitely recommend getting this.
 
got back from the install, for now everything looks good. the taskbar looks a bit something like you need to get onto first i'll report in

about the driver issue....

well, just run windows update, and it got my optional drivers, which were missing out on the install so for now, completely everything is working fine

about the taskbar issue.
the taskbar is doing a great job, easy access as well as not full very quickly ( like millions of tabs.
