Win 7 vs. Win 10?

For desktop, I personally like Windows 7 compared to the later editions. But I have nearly all versions installed in my various computer (one of them even has XP still there though I made it dual boot and installed Linux as the main OS there). The one thing I do not like about Windows 10 is that there is less clarity on the licensing and how the updates would come in the future. And Windows 10 license is fixed to a single machine too unlike the previous licenses which were not tied to the computer. I would recommend you to install Windows 7 till the time updates are available and is officially supported (which would be till 2020 I suppose). If you want to keep the computer for say another 10 years, it would probably make sense to install Windows 10 as it is free upgrade as of now (would not be valid after a couple of months).
 
I use Windows 10 only in a virtual machine. The reason is that I can then control communications with all the spyware and update servers. My primary OS is Win 8.1. With both OS's I find that i have to install Classic shell to have a usable menu structure.

W10 has hard coded IP addresses to various MS servers that bypass the internal firewalls. The only ways to prevent that communication is with either an external firewall or to run W10 as a guest inside of a Linux/Unix host and block the IP's via IPTables. This is also true of the Enterprise versions.

I am hoping that when MS stops giving W10 away free that they also stop the spyware. However I doubt that they will remove the spyware of make it easy to shut off.
 
win10 runs a lot faster than win7 for my tools. i regret waiting so long to upgrade. all my machines now are on 10.
 
I never really tried Win10. I like my Windows 7. You could also go for Linux which is great too.

Pretty much this. I liked Win 7, but i prefer Win 10 over it. I switched to it fairly early and i haven't regretted it since then.
 
Windows 10 is everything that 7 is, except better. Microsoft has been working hard to not ruin their reputation with another Vista.
 
Windows 10 boots faster and feels way lighter from Windows 7...
But Windows 7 still has the most beautiful GUI of all latest windows
 
Windows 10 pisses me off sometimes, it starts showing user account error "you've logged in to temporary account" and after you solve it your all settings are gone.
 
I have 3 laptops on Windows 10 and today upgrade my GF laptop to windows 10 as well. It perform 10% better than 8.1 under SSD . Just make sure that you turn off during the installation all permisions that microsoft ask to gain .
 
I prefer as most of your comments Windows 8.1 Pro but if you must choose pick Win 10.
 
The only real sticking point is that Microsoft wants you to sign in with a Microsoft account and if you choose not to you lose some features. Features that shouldn't need to be linked to any online account.

That says it all, hmm... no, thanks Microsoft. I prefer my good old pal Win 7 where I can do everything offline.

The only way to make sure you are spyware free is to use Linux. I have no idea if previous versions of Windows have spyware as well and I wouldn't be surprised if they had, because everything nowadays has spyware. If you are doing sensitive work and need to stay off the grid and away from government eyes, you would be stupid to use anything other than Linux (or a modified version based on Unix) anyway.
