Will this plan work?

I recently started a new site. I built the site under a domain I have had for a couple months and then, yesterday, I purchased a new EMD domain that fits the site.

Both domains are linked to the same file directory so essentially they are both the same site. Also, both domains are related to the same niche so it's not weird.

Eventually, I plan to phase out the non-EMD domain and make it a redirect to the EMD domain.

For now, I want to build a ton of backlinks (and all that good stuff) to the aged domain so the site starts getting traffic faster and ranking. Will this work? Any problems I will run into?

Someone?

I imagine this would work, but try not to get too obvious with it.
