I have a niche site and I'm thinking about selling Amazon products on it. The easiest way to do this is via a plugin such as prosociate which imports hundreds or thousands of products automatically.
But is this a good idea? Will these hundreds of pages with duplicated content hurt the rankings of my other pages (with high quality, unique content)?
Is it true that Google recognizes automated amazon affiliate sites and ranks them lower?

(It might be good to know that I won't be trying to rank those product pages, I get plenty of traffic via other pages and social media.)

So, automatically importing amazon products. Good for overall site rankings, yes or no? Any insights into this are greatly appreciated!

Duplicate pages will hurt your rankings. Why don't you manually rewrite those product descriptions ?

There is a huge possibility that your ranking will be smeared with astore kind of website due to the short description of the product it post automatically. These kind of sites are usually promoted via YT videos that they rank on Google and YT.

If you want to rank your own site then go for a review sites, you can also choose to opt in for email follow ups..

Host the Amazon shop externally on a new domain if you're not trying to rank it: *yoursitename*store.com for example.

This seems to work for me too. Subdomain is an independent site itself and if you put a sw link from the root domain you'll get some decent juice flowing in without the risk.

google webmasters guidelines (affiliate) say you must use your own reviews, not just copy from the seller

Check google webmaster guidelines, and never ever use any copy_paste content...
Just rewrite & after that use them for your site.

Thank you everybody for your recommendations. I have the same problem as OP. that is why I would appreciate every piece of interesting information about it.
I would like to try using subdomain for affiliate links. I have found some very nice articles (which I am going to use) that I'd like to share with you. While it may seem a little bit too technical for someone, it can be very helpful for others who try implementing this method on their own.

No they will be not effected but only if the site is not banned or de-indexed due to duplicate content.

Yes there are 1000s of sites on this type and they never ranks higher but all what those sites give is a linkback to Amazon and it'll increase Amazon sites rankings.

Not Good for SEO at all.

I would have not used this type of pages. They're not going to rank mainly because of the duplicate content issue.

If you want to make money with amazon, write some reviews targeting specific products and rank them. Otherwise, it is all pointless.

Copy Paste will never work with google. You have to make fresh content or rewrite something.

Don't bother using duplicate content man, especially for a long term white hat kind of project.

Duplicate content will affect the page ranking, since Google don't want to show the same content for the same question again and again. Hence it would be good if you prepare unique content with proper description.
