I was analysing my competitors backlinks, and I discovered that some of the backlinks are pointing to their XML sitemap pages.

<a href=URL/sitemap.xml> ANCHOR </a>

Will this pass any link juice ?

Will this pass any link juice ?
1/ spiders should be able to visit the links on a sitemap (this is their purpose); so the spiders should see all site pages from the backlink to the sitemap;
2/ but then the question is how natural is that? these links should not count as this is not natural, or just a handful may count as this can happen, but not in quantity.

Such links don't pass any link juice and I believe are not natural. Strange to see backlinks pointing to XML sitemap pages.

I think they were trying to get their sitemap indexed, or the links within the sitemap indexed faster - just point the link to the sitemap, and when the spiders crawl, it will crawl the links on the sitemap, and if the spider finds an interesting post, it will get it indexed in the process.
