I am just looking to update or downgrade rankmath and generatepress. just want to test some stuff.

Will this have any negative effect on the site? i feel rankmath will be okay because i havent really set anything in it but generatpress premium plugin might remove all the settings/design if i downgrade?

Downgrading Rank Math likely won’t affect your SEO if you haven’t configured it, but always back up settings just in case. Downgrading GeneratePress Premium may cause layout or design loss if newer features were used—back up your theme and customizer settings before testing.

Updating the plugins doesn't affect the website's SEO, but changing the design might have little impact.

Unless you are switching to a different plugin for onpage or design changes, then I don't think it is advisable if you have done Onpage improvements with the help of RankMath and designed using generatepress.. It will affect your rankings and design..

Updating themes and plugins don't have any impact on SEO, unless they significantly impact your site loading speed.

as everyone said, it's best to back everything up before making changes. Be especially careful about any important tags (noindex) or changes made to URL structure (permalinks) as these - if left unaddressed - can screw your rankings / indexation
