TL;DR: Cryptocoins are here to stay, but bubble could go nuclear soon.

My first thread here. I will probably poke a hornets nest with a stick, but who knows :)

Anyways, I have also invested in some cryptos and have mined few of those myself, however I cannot shake the felling that the whole thing will just collapse on people heads. Hard. I recognize the need and the innovation and therefore give my best effort to keep myself informed, but I am growing skeptical by each day.

Here are some observations that I have made, feel free to discuss and use them however you like.

  1. The whole software ecosystem excluding mining software is shit. There are some really terrible pieces of code in the wild that people trust their live savings with. My personal experience is with Monero and Eth wallets, that are pure abominations of software development. Monero wallet spews meaningless logs like there is no tomorrow and doesn't know how much work has to be done when syncing. Eth wallet is even better, my particular installation managed to crash multiple times when trying to sync and also went KIA by killing its own network connections. Not to mention that it is written in JavaScript which under no circumstances should be utilized to deal with that amount of data (multiple GB of blockchain information). Mining software is done well, I haven't done any thorough analysis, but it behaves consistently when dealing with various tasks (networking, resilience, hardware access).

  2. Services are terrible. Once glimpse at /r/Coinbase and man can see that the most funded and "clean" operation is led by donkey and two rabbits. They don't honor withdrawals (some people are missing 10k+ USD!), they don't support their customers, etc. One of the most interesting things that happen is that they from time to time credit or debit wrong customers...like WTF?!? Can you imagine if that level of incompetency existed in modern banking system or complex ventures like MMOs, money transmitting services (PP, Skrill, etc.). Just short explanation here: I don't mean that latter never screw up, it is just that those screw ups are rare and there are usually firm protocols in place to mitigate such types of disasters.

  3. Security. I won't even go there in detail. Each day exchanges go down, funds are siphoned in trucks, "contracts" are depleted.

  4. Most ICOs consist of most unbelievable junk ever made. People with 2 page PDFs promise to cure common cold and all types of cancer, while people throw money at them. Poorly written contracts in fewer lines of code than typical's CS student homework destroy millions of USD. For now it, looks like there is a race who is going to combine word blockchain with most random nouns (de-centralized blockchain for medical devices got me laughing the other day).

  5. The biggest lie ever: BTC was sold as anonymity tool, but its actually in totally different part of spectrum: now three letter agencies can almost undeniably prove that you have been transmitting or receiving illicit funds, thanks to crypto signatures which pinpoint your sorry ass in a few lines of code.

  6. Demand is overblown. Yup, there is a drug deal or two, but basically nobody uses coins except speculators and holders. On top of that, even a small increase in utilization collapses the whole system, transfers are on standby for indefinitely, transaction processing becomes worse than in traditional banking, and still, no one is completely certain on how to solve this - which was the reason for recent BTC fork.
The story about classical financial entities using BTC have been proven bust, since they understand now that they can create their own blockchains and just use the whole thing as another communication protocol, in which case end-customer will have nothing to benefit from.

  7. There is agenda behind this. I am not going political here, but one thing must be pointed out. It is a bit strange that both TOR and cryptocoins were actually developed by branches of certain countries military and intelligence community. I don't think that the plan here is to utilize technology in a typical conspiracy theory fashion, but it is a very convenient method to simply "erase" a lot of fiat by simple press of the button.
That's it for now. What do you guys think?

Interesting points. I think it can be summarised as two situations. Either 1) The inventor/s of Bitcoin were not perfect, the people who developed platforms and software for this 'new' tech made poor choices or mistakes along the way, the industry is seen by scammers and entrepeneurs as filled with opportunity + the market is (definitely) moved by hodlers, traders and speculators.

Or 2) It was deliberately created with purpose by a state or collection of states with the intention to absorb or erase international fiat currency.

I think situation 1 is more likely but i'm open to any evidence confirming either way.

Fair points OP. I do think crypto is here to stay but it's the wild west out there atm with a lot of scammers and crap.

Definitely a good read and some interesting points.

Can't say I disagree with any of it. However, it seems like with the recent release of mass amounts of ICO's and random tokens most governments and 3 letter organizations are really starting to update policies and laws as far as that goes. So hopefully that will at least make an impact on the amount of scams and shitcoins and tokens being released. (As long as they don't over regulate)

All just part of the process :)

Im was an avid bitcoin user before the fees got ridiculous lately. It's cheaper to send money to anyone, fast and most importantly as an honest vendor no chargebacks. Refunds are given when my obligations are not met. Not when there is fraud going on. Anyone using CC OR PayPal to receive payments will know how much fraud can hurt the bottom line

Once the fee issue is fixed I will definitely carry on using it day to day.

I appreciate your share. Regarding monero i accept their security is shit(everyone knows the story of the guy who lost 9800 xmr ,1 xmr is $90 so do the math) ,but when it comes to privacy monero is good.
About the exchanges everyone knows it's the starting stage of cryptocurrency we can't expect everything to be perfect ,it takes time to become perfect, there are tons of altcoins popping out everyday people are not investing on all those ,those which really worth ,people start mining ,i think its a good start first ever made in history currency by people to the people ,not by some big government who want to enslave whole world and kill who ever raise voice against them inside country and outside their country also

You obviously have no clue what you are talking about. My mate has a degree in Basketball and says crypto is the future, Bitcoin is going to be the new world currency, and soon one Bitcoin will without doubt be worth 1m. And he should know, because he has a Basketball degree.

It's Too early to decide about crypto life. As it takes times at least decade to get maturity in programs, So I think within a year we will know reality of crypto. By the ratio its growing So I think it will here to stay.

Block Chain will be the base of the new currency system in the following decades after the removal of the physical coins and notes.

They will create new digital currencies in response of devalued USD, Euro due to the mountain of debts and derivatives.

They learn how to track every transaction on BTC... absolutely not anonymous as 99% of the users think.

I don't trust the crypto. I play with them. I have a trading account, mainly in LTC, monthly I cash the gains and keep 20 LTC only as base for trading. I make between 4 to 9-10 LTC profit that I cash each month.

I am not so sure about the fraud, as fraud happens with cash as well. Well you can say that crypto did remove the forgery part, but still the responsibility just turned 180, but it is still the same story.

I think that is the sentiment crypto enthusiasts are trying to sell, but having a ledger that keeps data forever, kind of kills the whole point. The possible repercussions are terrible, can you imagine that you send someone BTC for something from a flea market and later on that person that person ends up being a pedophile? You are immediately marked as a suspect.

I don't take advice from the guy that has his own BTC making machine, this is all probably your own doing!

That is the stance I am having as well. Monitor it, use it, but don't count on it.

As someone who has been a miner, trader, dev and marketer for a few alts...

You're spot on,

Cryptocurrency is here to stay, it's the future of banking, I'd much rather take out a loan for 5k from 5,000 people who lent me a dollar, for interest rate reasons as well as safety, you loose a dollar it's a lot less of an issue losing 5k. That's a spec compared to the thousands of other reasons!

BTC is traceable, the IRS has had since 2015 software with the ability to TRACK bitcoin transactions, not to mention, the ledger is public, some scooby doo work would yield interesting results.

These ICOs are SHAT! I've watched ICOs come and go, NONE really different and sadly the altcoins that have features aren't as popular ( like Namecoin a DNS on the blockchain, yes a slow one but awesome )

The Security aspect of cryptocurrency is fine other than exchanges and such aren't regulated that well, SOME are better than most like coinbase ( sadly out of the ones I've used over the last 5 years ) coinbase is the only one up without wild losses and 5th grade issues with property lose.

The services issue and many others are natural for new concepts to take shape, I mean, wasn't rock and roll considered " devils music " before ZZ top and the doors " even slapped strings. More people seeing problems is what leads to innovative solutions taking shape and going facebook...

And yes, the agenda, one that stems to governments, hardware manufacturers and even banks themselves, TOR was created as a filter to catch folks through, you're more safe just being smart and deceptive online than using TOR like it's a invisibility cloak. Mining hardware in general seems like a ploy to garner insane profit margins...

Much more is in store for cryptocurrency, it DOES have a BUBBLE that needs popped 1st before it can really progress, but that bubble can't pop until the correction int he USD market happens.

No one knows , One day Bitcoin was said it will crash and another day it raised upto 500% no one knows if it crashes now after this post or raises by 1000%.

intresting indeed , sadly i sold i my btc when the prices was 700 ...horrible mistake , the prices will go down that is without any question , so take care guys , dont go and put all your eggs in one basket

1-6 has always been so, more or less, in that shape or similar, and yet, haven't hampered the growth. So why would they suddenly do so now?

As for 7, it makes no sense to me.

I believe the more people that get involved in blockchain and cryptos, the sooner the bubble will pop.

As someone who hasn't invested my life savings in the market, I hope this day comes for me to cash in on that huge correction.

It will remind me of the financial crisis in the US in 2008. But it will take a lot of people getting involved for the actual bubble to pop.

All the points are valid and relatively indisputable. I don't think anyone in their right mind would say something opposing those things. However it's to be said with all these things, the market still goes up. And the trend will still be heading upwards even with the crash (that I hope to happen).

Cryptos need to be the new "housing market" bubble before these things can become a reality. If it happens before, it'll scare people from ever paying attention to it again (which there's opportunity in that).

ignorance level in this thread is over 9000 thousand, how can you call something a bubble when barely anyone in the world knows about cryptocurrencies? LOL go ask someone on the street what is crypto and what is bitcoin surely they dont know, more of that dotcom bubble that occured early 2000's was like what? 60 fucking TRILLION dollars and crypto is WORTH BARELY what 1 MAN in the whole fucking world (Bill Gates for example) then how the hell can you call something like this a bubble?

Damn you people are so close minded OF COURSE there will be upsides and downsides of Bitcoin and other cryptos bitcoin can crash tommorow from 4300 to 3500$ even to 2000$ but that would be NOT bubble popping it would be healthy crash

Marketing is the key. BTC was around since 2009, and was unimportant until marketing took over.

For the 7, simple facts actually led me to that. First, amount of work done by agencies following the cryptocurrency trend. One of such papers can be found here

http://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/classes/6.805/articles/money/nsamint/nsamint.htm

Secondly, those agencies have tremendous computing capacities on their disposal and basically are able to "print" their own money (cryptocurrencies) without need to cooperate with other branches of establishment. Furthermore, this computing power also enables them to lure people with fiat in and just pull the kill switch on the whole system erasing overprinted paper money without any consequence except technical issues: we have already witnessed double spending attacks by private entities which is something in the realm of state sponsored agents:

Yup, waiting for that moment too :)

Quite easily, it is something that is growing and can burst .

it is speculation no one knows its true value until it becomes that value (lets say US dollar crashes tommorow) it would mean chaos and that would be moment where crypto would shine and that very moment could lead to a bubble in not-so-distant future
