I have a wordpress site that has links from forbes, IGN and other big sites. I want to add some features to my site which will increase my pageviews per visitor and reduce the bounce rate, however the features I want can't be implemented using Wordpress, not effectively anyway so I'll be using custom pages or using bootstrap or something like that.

Is it best to use a subdomain or is it better to have the features i want on in the sub folder?

Google says they look at a sub domain as a completely different website so you should use sub directories

I agree with lance, Moz wrote a very detailed article explaining how subdirectories are better for scores.

subdomain - not equal - domain in terms of ranking.
but in case of a ban or serp pessimization they will apply it to both.

100% go with sub-folder. you get the benefit of all the backlinks across all of your pages, while you would not, if you did subdomains.
