Wondering if local directories help ranking in google?

Is it a white hat?

and can I put up 40 of them in one day?

I found this local directories setup in fiverr and it is not expensive. If it works, I want to do it.

Completely depends on competition and niche. I have seen broken websites ranking with few directory links and shitty UX. You can put many in a day but the point is when it gets indexed. Fiverr is a good place to buy citations. But check their reputation first. Try to build citations by reverse engineering your competitors.

Yes! .. just do not overdo

there are never 40 good local directories .. probably only 2 or 3 (max 5-7 for larger cities)

with few I'd rather do it my self and control what is put on

Yes, it helps if those are not spammed. Make sure those are legit and don't overdo it.

Depends on your competition but generally, they wouldn't help much but are nice for link diversity especially if your website is based on a locality and not affiliate (best of) kinda website.
