Will increase article length result in ranking improvements?

NO, it does not. Writing more words for the sake of writing more words isn't gonna take you anywhere. When people say you have to check how many words do your competitors have and to make sure you have the same or more amount, they are right in this way:

If a page that ranks pos#1 by your keywords has 3k words, that means it takes 3k words to completely cover that topic keyword without going off topic. You can write 1k words long article about the same topic, but you will be missing some extra subtopics around the main topic that you could cover in your article.

However, there are some topics that can be fully covered in 500 words, and that's enough to rank top#1. Do your research, try to find all the LSI's and long tails around your target keyword.

I always thought this myself.

But then I had a closer look at healthline.com

Pay close attention to their article.

They are VERY short, considering the ranking keywords. But it doesn't matter.

Instead of introducing fluff, they provide only the crucial information.

Most of their headings have JUST ONE paragraph. A lot of the times even JUST ONE SENTENCE.

But every sentence they provide has a lot of value.

You should think more of the search intent and solve that issue first before you focus on the length of the article and other seo needs. The best you can do is look at the piece of article from the searchers perspective. Did your piece of write up satisfy the searchers needs.

You really need to pay attention to what was said above - to focus on the search intent. The relevance is taken into account in the first place when displaying the request at the top, and only then comes the length.
Yes, it is true that well-contented pages rank higher. However, if the text is overloaded with 'nonsense' and keywords, its position will drop sharply.

I am a part of article sharing site. Recently they started telling users to submit as long articles as 5000 words as it is ranked well in google.

Not sure if lengths will help exactly. Maybe in the context that you will have more headlines, paragraphs, and keywords in your article, but it doesn't necessarily mean that because of that your articles will get a higher ranking. Maybe you can test this to see if length changes anything.
