    Hi

I need some feedback about an issue I have with my website.

Some maggot placed my link on a directory website (sitewide) and it built up 3000 backlinks to my homepage within a 5 day period. I managed to contact the owner and got all links removed 3 days after it was placed so its not there anymore.

My site is only 15 days old but now I am thinking I will get a major penalty for this. What do you guys think?

I highly doubt it, I got some sites that show 700,000 back-links from a few domains now for a few years now and nothing happened.

I think Google understands that some websites like "Forums", "E-commence", etc type sites use a layout (Navigation, footer, header) the only thing that changes is the content in the middle. Say your website is linked in the footer of a site and that site has 50,000 pages, then you're site is going to show 50,000 links from this 1 site.

It's not web-spam - It's just how the internet works and I doubt google will penalize a site because of this, it's far to common.

But if you don't want your site in a specific directory, contact the owner of the site to remove it, if they don't response, use google's disavow tool.

Very interesting to know. I am relieved that such a situation would not cause penalties. The rabbit hole of IM goes deep.

Now you removed those links so you no need to worry about penalty.

    Take a look.

Sometimes, I'll purchase display banner advertising for a day on a website, next thing I know I'll have hundreds of incoming do-follow links from that site.

Talk about temporary back-linking. Find a high DA site, buy a display add for a few pennies a day. Insta - PBN network :)

I'm not doing anything wrong or anything shady, it's just the way things work. Google has to be mindful of things like this, they can't just penalize me for buying ad space on a respected blog. The reason I'm paying money is because my ad shows on every page of their site.

Think about it, why are main brands on the top of every search engine? Because they got budget and they get instant backlink profiles through advertising.

One thing I learned, people get afraid because they think what they are doing might be wrong. But they don't realize people do the same thing as others do with good intent (Like me, advertising to get business).

There's really no difference (I just got 5000 instant backlinks from advertising) - You got 3000 instant backlinks from a directory. What does google algorithm know? Why are my backlinks acceptable and your's not be acceptable?

If the site your links are on, is a good site then everything is cool, if you're linked on mal-ware or spam sites (then well disavow them). Just don't be afraid of the #'s shown in GWT of links to your site.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this. Appreciated. It was a spammy web directory which is why I worried but like I said its removed now. I just thought Google would look at a new site like mine and raise a major red flag if too many links were built up so quickly. Will continue to build links normally now.

Not all "Directory" sites are considered spammy, that's why I didn't criticize being listed in a directory.
    • DMOZ is a pretty big directory site and everyone considers it the "Holy Grail of SEO to be listed in it"
    • Yelp (Pretty much a directory Site) - Everyone worships them
    • Facebook Business Pages - Same Thing
    • Yellow Pages (Here in the US)
    • Google Business (Even google has their Directory)
    • Alexa Top Sites (Just a Directory List)
I don't see google penalizing any of the sites above, the reverse is true, they seem to be rewarded.

What makes a directory site spammy?

I agree, Google isn't stupid and they KNOW what directories are. Even if its not a AAA directory its not scary to me as long as its at least a legitimate directory and its not something weird like a porno directory. And as topcoder mentioned, if its a quality directory it could actually be VERY valuable (doubt you got a DMOZ or Google Biz listing though).

I can't give the URL out in public but lets just say its a lower quality general webmaster directory with a few thousand websites in different categories. Anyhow, its removed and so I'll see what happens.
