Will I get in trouble for this?

A good friend of mine, and his family, hass fallen upon bad times as of late.

He has a lot of debt now due to being laid off or a long tiem now and they have 4 kids so his wife cant really do much work to make money so he came to me asking me to set him up one of those "helpmepaymydebts.com" types of websites where ppl could visit the site, ready his story and whatever other stuff/pics he puts up there and then coulld donate a buck or two thru paypal or other means to help him out if they so desired.

Now, Im a bit leary of doing this as I personally don't feel comfortable setting thsi up for him, but I want to help him out in any way that i can.

I guess my big questions is:

Is this even legal to have a website liek this and accept money liek that - hes not a registered charity or anything, so I am not sure of the possible troubles we may get oursleves into if we try to set something liek this up.


Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Those don't generally work out unless they get picked up by a large news agency and get spread that way. IMHO, it's a waste of time, won't get him a cent. They've stopped running those stories.

Ditto... unless hes a gimp with some heart throb story about his kid being challenged with a multitude of health problems, it`s just going to be ignored. If he is physically fully functional with a working brain, then it`s not going to evoke enough compassion from anybody just because he has more mouths to feed than he can afford due to poor family planning. Not to be a jerk or anything, that's just how it`s going to look to anybody coming across it.

Noticing your are from Canada, with all the social security, and the lower population compared to the US, it makes it all the more difficult as well. Free healthcare will trump any my poor kids health care stories that US citizens understand all too well.

To answer your question though, you won`t get in trouble so long as you are not professing to be a charity.

He might be better off actually `working` at IM. At least get the guy writing articles or something. It pays crap, but it pays. Maybe you can workout a JV with him to do that kind of stuff and you can do the website/linkbuild/mon part. I think both of you would be overall more happy with some kind of arrangement like that. You both make some money (or you can just give it all to him) and he gains some dignity/respect from his family. Maybe we even see him post here in 3 months time with a classic thank you story

His keywords would be something along the lines of, "help me pay my bills" so people going to his site from a search engine result will be in the same boat as him. He will be lucky to get $1 donation a month. What he/you can do is, set it up with a adsense advertisement that is actually relevant toward what people can do to make a buck.

You should do some keyword research and see the competition, cpc amount, ect. to see if something like that is actually worth it. The trial of Market Samurai will help you do the research within a matter of minutes.
The search mentioned above gets 53 (or so) searches a day and will generate about $1 per adsense click. Not worth the effort to go after that keyword but you might find other relevant keywords that get more searches per day. You should also buy a domain name that consists of the main search phrase you are after, to help with SEO.

This project shouldn't teach him how to beg online or to build it for him, but how to market a particular niche. This way he can start doing it for himself and scale up his income.

Why don't you try to set up some fund raisers or something? That would prolly work better.

If he can afford the luxury to be resistant, it means he's not doing that bad after all.
