    I am currently on the 1st page for a keyword for one of the pages on my site. The page contains a keyword-rich article as well as images. I am wondering if I use CSS "display:none" on the text, if spiders will still crawl the text and if it will affect my rankings negatively at all.

    Why would you want to do that in the first place?

    But yeah, to answer your question, it most likely would have a negative effect on your rankings. Google does not like hidden text. It's a sign of bad quality.

    Yes, that is against Google's policy, it is considered black hat.

    Google's robots are actually intelligent, they're getting smarter and smarter. Don't mess with Google or they'll shut your business down off Google.

    Home Page:
    It does if you use
    Code:
    content:"this is a text";

    even if you use
    Code:
    display:none;

    Why would Google show something in the meta description which is hidden? this will be confusing for the user as he wont be able to find that's string/text when viewing the page ...
