I have a WP blog which has unique articles.... however I also post amazon products to generate cash leads.

My question is, when the search engines see the amazon items there are going to be thousands of other sites using exactly the same product description, so my content wont be unique.

Will google hammer me for this, and is there any way around it? Im guessing there must be some way around it, as sites like amazon simply use the manufacturers description, yet they still get indexed.

Thanks guys

google doesn't care if the content is unique, they'll just display that content that seems to be more relevant (have more backlinks and such). in this care probably the amazon one :)
they really don't care, they said it themselves

There are no Google penalties for placing non-unique content on your own websites.

Will google hammer me for this

I have thousands of non-unique pages indexed by Google from various autoblogs... I'd say "no". :)

So you don't think if I put 5 similar presell pages on selected keyword based domain would effect those sites rankings for those keywords?

I have an autoblog ranking on the 1st page of google.. at the keyword having 132Million Competition!!!
Content is not unique... Still it is growing!!!
For another autoblog with non unique content, PR got to 2 within 2 months... So dont think that there is any problem in using non unique content! :)

I used a plugin the pulled in articles from a directory, formed a rss feed and dripped them into my blog....my aritcles showed up in front of the original....it was straight dup content.

It is pretty useless though if your pages end up in the supplemental index.

Best thing to do is find a plugin that will add something to either the beginning or end of your post....whether it is a text snippet or some other advertising.....the post will become, to some degree, unique.

What your guys thoughts on having 5 or 6 very similar presell pages all linking to a common sales page? Wouldnt google spider them all and see that they are similar?

They won't do anything but it will make it a lot harder for you to move up the search engine, because its all about relevant content. So if you took it from some where thats been around for a while you won't really be moving any where.

Google has stated that there is "no duplicate content penalty"

I believe that a few sentences later, they say that they do try to notice the "rare exception" where people are spamming websites with duplicate content for backlinks.

Note that "no duplicate content penalty" does not mean that there is a "bonus" given to the content - meaning that the page is essentially worth 0 in their algo as opposed to a + or a -

As well, (and this is personal speculation) too much duplicate content may dillute the total value of other content / links or backlinks to a site
