Will giving my competition mass impressions help my quality score?

So if it's true that quality score is largely determined by CTR in comprison to your competition, I was thinking of giving the other businesses about 30 impressions for each of the 5 main KWs (which get about 80-100 impressions a day) in my niche.

If (relative) CTR is the main QS component, this should boost my score, correct?

If this is senseless, please let me knwo. If not, how should I go about it carefully.

Senseless. While it's true that QS is determined by CTR, how long your ads have been running is also a strong determining factor. If your competition has been running ads for months with a steady CTR then adding some impressions now to "slightly" (because that's all an extra 100 impressions is going to do) lower their CTR won't do much, besides maybe raise their CPC, but even that's doubtful.

But of course, I've never tried what you're thinking of doing, and am only speaking on what I know in regards to adwords. Give it a try and post back if it worked or not so others can:
1. Learn from your mistake
2. Follow in your footsteps

I think by "giving 30 impressions" you mean doing a search on the keywords and not clicking any ads.

Google surely considers only unique users. Doesn't matter how many times you do the same search in a day, you count basically as one search. So the effect of your search on QS is minimal, especially since they calculate QS on the last few thousand searches of the keyword.

I'm assuming you would pause your campaign before doing this since if your own ad appears, the net result is nothing since everybody's CTR goes down. However, pausing a campaign is not immediate. The command has to be sent to all data centers and this may take a couple hours before they all get the message.

In other words, a stupid idea although I must congratulate you on at least thinking of it. A better thing to do would be to click your own ads. Spend the click cost to get your QS up. One click out of 100 or less impressions per day should have a larger impact over the long run. But again, Google likely would detect this. And would it make a difference compared to the keyword's recent history (those last few thousand searches) and that of your competitors? I don't think it would.

No, the best way to get your QS up and the fastest way is to write better ads that do get higher CTR naturally.

There's a number of ways to block my own ad from viewing. IP exclusion, or better yet search from an out of the area IP (I have my adwords setup to show in my area only, unlike my competition).

Yesterday I did a test with one of my keywords I'm about to delete anyway. Test went like this (using TOR): KEYWORD *search button*, "fhfhfhhfhhfhfh" *search botton*, KEYWORD *search button*, "hghhfhfhfh" *search button*. Entered the keyword 20 something times. Came out with 18 impressions.

I think you give too much credit to google for its ability to filter foul play.
