This may be a dumb question but will a gateway on my main homepage/landing page affect googles ability to spider the page and index it/keep google updated? If it does affect it should i try putting a timer on the gateway popup to let a possible google spider see the page first before the popup......or will it simply not matter for search engines?

when you say gateway, you mean like cpa lead/zango gateways?
google will have no problem indexing your page. search engines don't interpert the javascript. they just read the html. so you will have no problems getting pages indexed.
