additionally, wikipedia is continually scraped and recreated as content on other sites, so you start to get links from all over

I've been contributing to the Wikipedia since ages and none of my links ever got removed.
And just in case u missed it....this thread was all about ranking for the same keyword...not for ranking in competitive markets.

Just a hint from the days of MFA sites....Ugly or useless sites encourage the user to click NEXT. Leave your link but make the article worthless. Your link will stay, but visitors will be more likely to click BACK to the results and choose #2, Just like a garbage site USED to encourage Ad clicks.

If you are a reputable contributor, they won't get removed.
Or you can restore dead links.
Search google "your keyword" "dead link" site:wikipedia.org
Then find the dead link in the article.
1- If you already have an article which is suitable to the dead link, replace the dead link with your content's link.
2- If you don't have, write a decent content and replace the dead link with your newly written article's link.
It will most likely stay.
