I got a wikipedia link on a pretty big article like a week ago, the link was contextual and the article has been edited many times since with the link still being there in references. But for some reason neither Ahrefs or Webmaster Tools can find the wikipedia link, I have many times seen wikipedia links pop up when i search for other sites on Ahrefs so i find it very weird. Can someone explain this?

There was an article few weeks ago I think on search engine land, they kicked out around 280 shady editors who were taking money for creating links on wikipedia, some were charging one time fee, some a monthly fee. As you can imagine a lot of those shady links were also removed form wikipedia articles. If yours is still there may be google doesn't give them as much weight as they used to, or may be wikipedia blocks the bots from crawling those links.

Or the backlink checkers are not as competent as Google.

WMT is pretty slow to show the links, so I wouldn't consider it for the being. As for the links not showing up in the link crawlers - you may simply need to wait a little more. Not sure if Wikipedia would block any crawlers.

It was more than likely deleted, or could have been edited out. There are always new updates and edits being done on Wikipedia so that was more than likely the reason
