Hi Guys,

Hopefully, you guys might be able to advise me.

I realise that Wikipedia links are no-follow but I have heard they are still beneficial to a site.

I have been doing some work as a Wikipedia editor, amending articles etc. These articles are nothing to do with me but just topics i have an interest in.

I work as a photographer and so have been to some pretty remote places and been present at some big word events that i have images of and own the rights to.

My questions are; If these places or events have Wikipedia articles without good images, is it a good idea to try and add images that i have taken, that would link back to my website? I would only do it where relevant and to the benefit of the article.

Will this benefit my website, in terms of DA etc

And is there anything i should be aware of that could be a problem/get me banned/damage my site with google.

Any advice would be so helpful! :)

It's quite easy. Look up a wiki page in your niche (referably one with little exposure, to avoid removal). Write an article in your site adding some facts that are not mentioned. Then mention those facts in the wiki page and add a reference to your site.

Wikipedia links are all NoFollow links however having a mixture of ******** and NoFollow makes a more natural-looking link profile. As Wikipedia is one of the biggest websites with an Ahrefs DR of 91, it helps in making them good for SEO.

So in terms of DA, it will work for sure.;)

I think I have found the flaw in my own plan!

Am I right that it is impossible to get any SEO benefit from images as you add them by uploading to Wikicommons? (I think this is the only way to do it)

I have found some older articles saying that links and citations were needed for images, however, I think Wikipedia has stopped this.

Does anyone know if this is the case?

You will choose your license to distribute images, mostly creative commons
Might be worth to "sacrifice" few images to get NF links:)

I had a look, and might be missing something but, where do you add the link to your site?

There is an option to upload from Flickr but I can see any way to link the image to my site and so get the nofollow link?

Actually you do not upload from Flickr but enter the full link of the image to wikimedia, hence the link:)

Sorry yes, you are right, but you're still only linking to your Flickr account?

There is no way to link to a site other than Flickr.

Unless I am missing something (which is very likely!)
 
I would say that the massive no follow links in wikipedia are still important to google regardles of its not passing the link juice but providing the most quality information that the users are seeking for.
