Wikipedia has first search result

So lets say I want to rank for a specific keyword and when I search for that KW in google, the 1st result to show is the wikipedia page for that KW. Does it mean it would be easy to rank for that keyword or it's the opposite, and it would be impossible to rank?

You generally aren't going to outrank Wikipedia unless you're an official site or authority site.
 
It really depends on what the Wikipedia page is about. If it just contains a short 250 word segment, the it can be quite easy to outrank. Just have double or even triple the amount of keyword related content, and you are good to go. Find high pr blog owners with a relevant niche, and you can guest post for each other. If you are still having trouble outranking, buy a Fiverr blast of crappy backlinks and send it to the Wiki. I do not recommend this though, because it is considered sabotage.
 
I agree with Woozybluff, it really depends on the length of the article and how close the keyword is to the wikipedia page

In fact I like to see them in 1st place
as it means its unlikely anybody else is going after this keyword
 
It's still possible to beat Wikipedia because many keywords are information related keywords which don't have high competition. Or they are very broad (usually one word) keywords. Its not very hard to beat them on midtail and longtail keywords.

Same for me, most of Wikipedia pages are very easy to outrank :)
 
I'd say if wikipedia is the first result the keyword is medium-ish to low competition. You can definitely outrank Wikipedia.
 
Thanks for all these reply... And what if the 1st search result is google image with thumbnails? Good or bad?
 
that a good way to tell how many compeating site there is but yes u can rank for tell me what all u doing to rank
 
I actually disagree with the opinions about wikipedia being easy to beat. If the first search is a wikipedia entry, then I'm willing to bet that wikipedia would be impossible to beat. Check out any of the high cpc keywords and you will find a wikipedia page at the top (Mesothelioma, insurance, viagra etc). Try out any brand name or person name, wikipedia comes up (unless there exists an official site for the person/brand) - brad pitt, barrack obama

That said, wikipedia does not do well for non generic terms (because they do not create pages around those) - so while wikipedia ranks for the keyword "insurance" it does not rank for "buy insurance". It similarly does not rank for "Mesothelioma law firm" or "brad pitt movies". Hope you get the idea.
 
Wikipedia pages are just like all others pages on the Web. Some Wikipedia pages have really high authority and are nearly impossible to outrank, while others can be outranked quite easily. It all depends on the keywords you are going to rank your website for, the length of Wikipedia article, the number of links that point to that article, etc.. There is no one single solution to this.

So first, we advise you to research whether it makes sense to outrank that particular Wikipedia page, or you'd better focus on promoting your site for some other, less competitive keywords.

If you decide that it will work out all right, you need to promote your site using the tried-and-true SEO practices: build a diverse range of backlinks, vary your anchor text, have perfect On-Page SEO, etc..
