Wierd Google Indexing

Has anyone experienced situations in which google indexes keywords not as posts added but as the entire main page?

Since when does google index keywords too? I thought indexing is about pages only.

I think you mean that your home page is ranking for a search term you have an inner page targetting.

Site is about cars. Home page has generic car article.

Inner page has article about windshields.

Home page is appearing in serps for windshield.

To answer that question, yes. It happens.

It happened more when I was new to seo. This normally occured when:

1. Poor On Page
2. Incongruent link building
3. New Site

Go over your on page again. Ten times. Check image tags on all pages. Check site map. Check silo category pages. If you find no errors, do it twice.

Also check if google actually has your target page indexed.

If that looks good, check you back link profile. If you have links targeting the term pointing at home page, fix that.

If no errors, build a couple links to inner page targeting the keyword. That tends to help.

If that fails, I have had it happen with a new site that google is still indexing. I could normally tell this was happening based on site map and WMT. If google didnt index all the pages, that means I needed to wait.

If @lightningblitz is correct in regards to what you were asking, then I see this happening in two circumstances usually.

1. When the percentage of exact match anchor text backlinks pointing to your page is too high, then that page won't rank for that keyword, but another page on your website will, albeit in a lower position.

This can also happen when your backlinks are being discovered, but haven't all been discovered yet, so Google temporarily thinks that you have too high a percentage of exact match backlink density.

2. Google dance.
While a new page, or a page with new backlinks, is dancing in and out of the serps, while it is out of the serps, another page on your website will temporarily rank for its terms, but usually in a much lower position.

I mean i got mainsite about cars. called XXX
Got 2 posts one called " NEW BMW how to drive it "
second " BMW drifts "

And when I type in google NEW BMW how to drive it i dont see my post but i see my mainsite ( XXX )

What backlinks have you buitb to new BMW how to drive it?

Have you got a lot of backlinks with the exact match anchor text?

Google only indexes the website's pages, not the keywords. But try to fix your on page seo.

This is typical when your on-page and/or off-page is "confusing"

Google thinks the displayed page is more relevant for the term. And not the page you want.

There might be various reasons for it.

On-page
Is your homepage mentioning words BMW and such? If so, Google will rank it instead if inner page because of it's authority.

Off-page
Same with links. Do you have links with BMW anchors point to homepage? If so, inner page will have hard time outranking it's big mama.

Overall.... Google thinks your inner page is a little brat seeking attention and not worth ranking.
