I get the appeal behind affiliate marketing.

Low start up cost. No product or inventory needed. A proven winning product ready to promote.

It all makes sense, and for a lot of people affiliate marketing is a great option for starting out. But in this thread I wanted to make the case for selling your own product or service. Why? Because there is so much more money to be made - and you are not at the mercy of someone else or some network.

You may be thinking - I don't have anything to sell and I wouldn't even know where to begin. Which is fair. But the truth is starting your own mini business/agency and selling your own products or services is much easier than you would think. There are all kinds of resources available online to help you get started with whatever it is you want to sell.

With affiliate marketing you are doing all the hard work of selling someone else's product just to earn a portion of the profit. In addition to this, your efforts are helping to grow someone else's marketing list - not even your own. This is not ideal! Start getting your fair share for your marketing efforts.

Instead of desperately looking for methods to promote affiliate offers and get rich over night, you would be soo much better off spending that time planning and coming up with a solid business model that you can start. Think of some things you are good at and consider how much you could charge others for doing that thing. For me, I was really good at creating WordPress websites. So I started a mini agency making WordPress sites for people and I make way more money than I ever did with affiliate marketing.

You get to keep all of your own profits and you get to set your own rules. But it takes EFFORT. Affiliate marketing is the easier route - this is the harder (possibly) more rewarding route. If you take the time to do things right and stay committed, selling your own products/services is 100% the way to go.

I won't spoon feed anyone specific business ideas to do, you need to figure out what will work best for you personally and come up with a plan of action and stick to it. If you have any questions or need help getting started leave a reply below and I will try my best to help you out!

You said you started mini-agency creating Wordpress websites, so how excatly begin with starting mini-agency for my services, I mean, what I need to do to find first, legit clients, niche is not important, but let say that also for software related stuff. Make portfolio then go advertising on facebook, linkedin? Cold call local businesses? What do you recommend?

Wow! thats a good share, I couldn't agree more. Can I ask about your mini agency profit? Do you work alone? How long do you run this agency?

I actually agree with you.. it is better to sell your own product.. or start your own.. than selling affiliates..

I agree. I work as a freelance copywriter and there is no week where I have to wonder if there is any work to do or if I will make any money. The reason why I started writing: I knew I’m good at Dutch and I’m a pretty creative, straight forward writer. So I sell what I’m good at, and many others suck at :).

Why would you waste time and money at things you might not be good at? If you want to earn something: WORK for it!

And yes, working involves discipline. Most people nowadays don’t have any discipline. That’s the biggest problem and the main reason why people fail.

The same question, how do you get clients and how much do you charge?
These are the most difficult questions for me and I think for anyone else.

Thanks in advance.

There was a time when I could put a political sign on the side of the road with the words "Websites $99" and my phone number and I would get calls like crazy, but that was 10 years ago.

Can't go wrong with craigslist for cheap website leads but be consistent in the cities you target, don't spray and pray and remember that 9/10 craigslist leads want cheap and fast not expensive and quality.

Thank you! Yes I work alone. I'm a web developer so I am able to easily customize sites for clients as needed. And I am just getting up and running as of just a few weeks ago - already have a few clients :)

It depends on a few different factors. Are you a people person on a limited budget? If so, cold calling could get a great way to get your first few clients.

I'm a big digital marketing guy so I always reccomend Facebook ads for getting clients although mastering that platform can be challenging for beginners. Google and Bing ads could be good options as well depending on how competitive the keywords are for whatever niche you're in.

That's awesome that you are able to make a career out of freelancing. That's what it's all about :)

Interesting, I've never considered Craigslist for website leads but thats smart I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for your reply! Cheers

This is my ultimate goal. I had a business that was just starting to gain traction, but then I fell on hard times and had to sell my equipment. Now I am doing this to learn how to better promote my business and make enough to get new equipment
