So I was finishing the rough draft of a product I'm building and thought I'd share the bit about marketing in it for the newbies and those struggling to "make it" with IM. This is pretty much the closing to the book.
The title to this thread is a prime example. I didn't sit here for 20 minutes thinking about what kind of title would attract attention, I just knew. That's what practicing marketing does. It makes your marketing flow naturally and more of an "intuition" than a skill you develop. Also I haven't spell checked it... so have fun with that.
Marketing is the act of selling. Good marketing is selling without pitching. If your "pitch" comes across as something directly meant to make a sale, you're doing it horribly wrong.
The trick is switching on the inner marketer inside your head. Just write your article, then think "What would people want to buy after reading this?". Just like anything else in your life, practice makes perfect. There's no real way to write it out for you, and any book that claims to do so is lying.
Marketing takes practice. Just like meditating, riding a bike, reading, writing, and etc. You can read a book about how to ride a bike for hours for hours, researching the physics of it, the pressure needed to rotate the pedal, how the steering mechanism requires X amount of axial force to turn 13 degrees, but what good is all that?
It's just drastically over complicating a very simple process. It also puts the task on a pedestal. You'll begin thinking it's much harder than it really is, which will make you go to bike riding forums, where you'll read more about the intricacies of it all, which just exacerbates the problem.
Then you start seeing posts on the forum like: "I finally did it! I rode without falling and without training wheels!". This then builds jealousy. You start feeling like you're the only one that can't get it. You start feeling like there's some super secret method of riding that damned bike. But there isn't, you just haven't actually placed your butt on the seat yet and tried.
So go experiment and learn how to ride your own bike like a big boy.
