When searching for one of my customers by domain name, I came across some recent links that I didn't build from crappy sites that are pointing at a page that does not and has never has existed on the domain. Someone is building spammy links to a page that doesn't exist on this domain.

I don't get it. Why?

May be negative seo? Did your page rank for keywords?

There was/is no page involved.

Stinks the links are from bad sites. Might be a good idea to keep an eye out and make sure you don't have a whole bunch more coming in, while rare as mentioned it could be negative SEO. Probably isn't if you didn't have anything ranking previously but hey if they send the links to non-existent URLs you can redirect them for good or bad.

Does your client own all domains? .com, .net, etc.

Maybe somebody bought a service for his own domain that screwed up by getting the domain ending wrong.

Highly unlikely but possible.

I am not a blackhatter, so I was wondering if there was some purpose to doing it.

Could have been an indexing attempt? I've seen some strange requests for non-existent pages after submitting a URL to an indexing site.
