It doesn't help you as you expect. Most of the time(from my experience) PBN doesn't create any good effect for a site. It just wastes of money; I think so. Better do regular high quality white hate SEO, White hate may take a long time but its effect is outstanding.

PBNs create amazing value. You just have to do it properly. Try ranking in the consumer loan niche with just "whitehat" SEO xD
 
If you are doing affiliate sites in a competitive niche, then PBN helps. You can use it to improve your rankings.
