From my experience, Instagram seems much better at placing accounts into clear niches. The algorithm feels more structured: you can explore specific topics freely, and each Reel almost has its own “rabbit hole” where related content keeps showing up.

On TikTok, it feels more random. Content doesn't follow a consistent pattern . as a business you might go viral, if you're lucky. but it most of the time it would result in low views I feel like.

Instagram also seems stronger for niche communities. People in the same niche that follow each other, like similar content, and that creates a visibility loop where related posts keep popping up during doomscrolling for target demographic. This is how I feel the algorithm behaves

So my question is: what am I missing? What is TikTok actually better at compared to Instagram, especially for businesses?

You’re not wrong in your experience of the platforms your mental model of Instagram vs TikTok is actually pretty accurate. What you’re “missing” isn’t that TikTok is secretly better at niches in the same way Instagram is… it’s that TikTok is optimized for a completely different advantage, and businesses often misunderstand what that advantage is.

You’re right about Instagram.
Instagram is better for niches, communities, and compounding growth, TikTok is better for fast reach, testing ideas, and demand discovery. TikTok feels random because each video stands alone, Instagram feels structured because accounts + niches compound, TikTok finds what works.
Instagram builds something that lasts.

TikTok can show your content to many new viewers fast, even if they don’t already follow you.

Tiktok has a really good reach especially if you can start a trend but IG reels has really picked up recently for business

So what I’m understanding is that
1) With every new TikTok video, I’m basically testing how it performs with the general public. But I’m a nobody each post, it’s less about interest or investment in me or the idea behind it, and more about quality and emotions.
2) Since it reaches new people, it can act as a funnel, pulling in scattered users who would actually love my niche but don’t know about it yet, and converting them into Instagram followers. That feels like a strategy

It’s also great for trends, discoverability, and fast audience growth, while Instagram favors niche retention and predictable engagement loops

TikTok is better for fast organic reach and testing offers, you don’t need a niche page to go viral, one good video can reach millions.

TikTok strength is velocity and discoverability; its "For You" page is engineered to surface new creators to massive audiences rapidly, making it superior for brand building and trend-jacking. Instagram algorithm reinforces existing niches, making it better for community retention and direct sales. TikTok is for explosive growth; Instagram is for deepening customer relationships.

TikTok can give faster organic reach than Instagram. Its algorithm shows content to new users, making it easier to go viral and get engagement quickly.

Tiktok is better when it comes to Brand exposure and virality.

I run the same brand page and content on both Instagram and Tiktok. The Tiktok page grows 3 times faster than the Instagram page. That's a lot of insight.
