Hi there,

This question has been in my mind for a while, I heard some explanation about "Hidden PBN" or something like that, but didn't know the steps and details.
Today I find another example, and wanted to learn.

e.g. talkie-ai.com is outranking when search character ai, this sounds a little reasonable since it's AI character related site.
but this site: insnap.ai is outranking when search instameta, this is weird. I did some search but find nothing connect between insnap.ai and instameta.
On the other hand, insnap.ai has very low ranking with the brand insnapAI.

How could this happen?
If there is anyone willing to tell more, I am willing to pay.

“hidden” one means they make the network hard to detect:
  • Hosting sites on different IPs/registrars.
  • Using different themes/designs.
  • Making them look like unrelated, real websites.
These backlinks might have anchor text for unrelated queries (like “instameta”), which pushes Google to associate that term with the target site.
Even if Google doesn’t see topical connection, strong backlink authority + exact-match anchor text can sometimes outrank actual brand owners.

Thanks for your reply and explanations.
So it means those "hidden" are what we (users, SEOers) hard to find and detect, but Google can find it and know it and "trust" it, is this understanding correct?
Then this is really interesting, Google knows it, "trust" it and give the authority, but does not display them in SERP (otherwise we SEOers can find it)

Is there an advanced way to find those hidden PBN / backlinks?
Thanks again

Not exactly, when I say “hidden,” I mean hidden from competitors and manual inspection, not from Google.

Google’s crawler can see most PBN or backlink networks unless the site owner takes extreme technical measures (blocking bots, cloaking, etc.), but they usually don’t and they actually want Google to see them so the links pass authority.

The reason they seem invisible to us SEOers is that the networks use different IPs, registrars, site themes, and content topics, so there’s no obvious footprint you can detect at a glance.

A hidden PBN can be something where only the Google bot is allowed and all other bots are blocked.

For example, it's very easy to block Ahrefsbot. So, if those domains do not show up in tools, then there's a high chance that a manual reviewer (not from Google) will not find them either.

We have done tests like this, and it works perfectly fine. Some people also like to hide their domains, but most don't really bother.

thanks for further explanations and that's what and why I wanted to ask, the 2 questions:

1. Google's Guideline says it's violating if a site provides different content to Google crawlers and actual users, so how and why Google still trusts these "hidden PBN" and pass the authority to linking site?
2. It's reasonable those hidden sites return error code or anything else to the manual (actual users) if they are hidden to user but visible to Google, but, as long as Google can crawl them as stated, and they are high DA, the common result is they shall be displayed in SERP, is it? then how come they are "hidden"?

Thanks for reply, but this is what I wanted to ask, like above question 2:
If a site is visible to Google crawlers and blocked other crawlers, then Google will be able to crawl it.
As long as Google crawls it, and it's high DA + Google trusts the content quality >> then, at time user searches a related term, then it shall be displays in Google's SERP, isn't it?
I just didn't get clear understanding how come they can get hidden in the google's result and google crawlers trust at same time.

Its likely ranking because the domain has backlinks or old SEO signals connected to instameta or its benefiting from redirects domain history
Thanks for reply and new findings! How to know if it's getting old signals or benefiting from redirects?
I input "instameta.ai" but still see no redirect...

Sometimes google ranks sites higher if they have strong backlinks or topical relevance, even if the brand name doesn't match.

As long as the Googlebot can crawl your website, it will be all good and everything is working normally. The site will appear in Google (as long as there are no other issues).

But please note, if you only allow the Googlebot and you get a visitor from Google, then that visitor will not see your website. So you need to be careful and be aware of what you are doing.

Great questions, let me clarify both points:

1. Cloaking vs. PBNs:
What Google bans is when you show different content to Googlebot and to human visitors (that’s cloaking). But in the case of PBNs, they usually show the same content to everyone Google, users, competitors. That’s why Google can crawl them, see the backlinks, and pass authority. The “hidden” part just means the sites are disguised to look natural (different hosts, themes, registrars, etc.), so competitors can’t easily connect them as part of a network. They aren’t hidden from Google, they’re hidden from other SEOs.

2. Why they don’t always appear in SERPs:
A PBN site can still have authority even if it doesn’t rank well itself. Authority comes from the backlink profile of that domain (historical links it built up before expiring, or even new ones). Google doesn’t need to rank the PBN site high in the SERPs for it to pass link juice, it just needs to crawl it and recognize the inbound/outbound links.

Sometimes PBN sites are indexed and you can find them in SERPs (often for random, low-competition terms). Other times they’re low-quality and don’t surface in search much but as long as they’re in the index, the links can still transfer authority. That’s why they feel “hidden” to us.

This can happen if the site is part of a hidden PBN or uses aggressive SEO tactics like exact-match anchor links from unrelated sites. Sometimes Google indexes signals that seem relevant, even if the brand itself isn’t strong. It’s not always obvious from the surface.

Google sometimes shows similar sites if the searched brand has weak presence, overlapping keywords, or backlinks pointing to related terms. It’s usually algorithm behavior, not a PBN.

very clear and detailed answers. appreciate it and your time.

Sometimes domains rank unexpectedly due to strong backlinks or relevance signals beyond the brand name itself.

Rankings like that can come from strong backlinks or topical signals that outweigh the brand match

Thanks for the replies, this is what I wanted to ask:
about the "outweigh the brand match", "relevance signals beyond the brand name itself", is there a way to find where the relevance is or to find a clue of the relationship between the 2 brands?

Just like the OP example, after researching, I didn't find any info, singals the "instameta" is related to "insnap" or "insnapai"...

please advise. Thank you
