Why the emphasis of VPS over shared hosting?

Why is there such an emphasis on getting a VPS to host your MNS's on this board? For the cost of a mediocre VPS, you can get ten shared hosting plans with top companies, such as hawkhost, stablehost, downtownhost, etc.

They all run 50% off coupons at least 1 week a month, and you can put 25-50 decent MNS's on each host. The support on these shared hosts is usually way better than what you'll get with a managed VPS, and on a simple Wordpress CTR theme there won't be a difference in speed.

So what am I missing here?

Shared hosting is shared by thousands of customers, but with a VPS, that number is much lower
 
well, maybe not thousands of customers but more like thousands of websites all hosted on the same server. sometimes even in the tens of thousands if the shared hosting provider oversells and believe me, you'll know it when your site tries to load.
 
Also with VPS you are allocated certain resources for your site. Such as processor core and speed, ram, space, etc. So if you are running a large forum or site, you won't have any issues with load times.
 
If one of your sites gets a lot of traffic, your shared host will shut down your site because you're using more resources than you're allowed. If you're serious, you can get a VPS and that's less likely to happen.
 
With a VPS you don't have to worry about others hogging all of the resources like shared hosting. Plus you have root to your server which means you can install applications/plug-ins that you need. Hope that helps :)
 
Shared hosting should never be an option IMO.. Last thing I want is to have a spammy site on my same server block and have it effect the others that are in their.

I typically run 10 site on unique IPs per VPS. So the costs definitely do go up, but so does load time and productivity and sometimes even rankings. You figure you typical VPS is $250 per month so you are looking at around $25 per month per site for hosting. If your site is producing this is a no brainer, and if your site is a top producer consider even putting it on its own VPS.
