Why spin content when you can syndicate?

I don't understand the obsession with spinning. Is there some kind of benefit I am aware of to having spun content over just syndicating content? Seems to me having tier 1 web 2.0's with syndicated content from your site would be easier and higher quality. And I would think even article directories would prefer syndicated content due to the higher quality.
Big sites syndicate content all the time, seems to me all you do by spinning content into tons of content that adds no value to the user and is generally crappier than just creating syndicated content is show Google that you are trying to game them, and that your original content is worth nothing. I would even go as far to say that syndicating content adds authority to your site.

What do you have to say for yourself BHW? Can anyone give me a real reason or two why I should spin my content vs. syndicating it to my tier 1 sites?

Duplicate content is penalized, if google sees the same article over and over and over again it will start penalizing the sites that use it.

This statement is entirely false and I will explain why.

One of my most effective link building strategys was this-

1) Order 25x 500 word articles
2) Submit them to ezinearticles
3) Once approved, submit them to 5-10 other high quality articles directories
4) Submit them to high quality PR sites
5) Wait for synidcation to begin and other sites to republish them

That was it - no spinning, just copy & paste.

If you were around when the first Panda update came into play, you will remember reading everyone saying article directories are dead, they are pointless, dont use them for link building anymore etc etc

Well I had a fair few sites ranked with this approach and only 1 of them got hit with Panda which in hindsight and our current knowledge of Panda it was obvious why. But at that time everyone was drinking each others regurgitated bullshit. Fine by me ^^

But I'll be honest, I haven't tried this approach for quite some time now so whether it is still effective or not I don't know - but don't fully discount syndication and certainly don't fall victim to claims such as the post I have quoted.

Make of that what you will!

The key there is the number of submissions.

Submitting the same content to 5-10 other sites is nothing - you are not gonna get a penalty.

Try cracking a "hard" niche - you will need 100s or 1000s of articles to do so. Obviously there are some exceptions. I used to use a method similar to what you describe with adding a bit more to the mix.

Submitting an article to 10 sites will not cut it on competitive niches- the IP diversity is too low. You need 100s of diff IP addresses coming in from directories, web 2.0 and other types. Spamming the same content to 500+ article directories is gonna get you a penalty at some point. Getting that many articles written is expensive or very time consuming if you do them yourself. Spinning allows you to use your content more efficiently. This does not mean crappy spin that reads gibberish - quality spin that allows 1 article to be used on 100s of sites with no threat of penalty.

Why isn't HuffingtonPost, BleacherReports, etc. getting penalized then?

Does the OP have a PR 6 - PR 7 site he's talking about here?
Dup content on a site and Dup content in links are different things though.

If you can't spin properly, word for word, sentence for sentence, paragraph then forget it and syndicate otherwise you will soon be a victim of the next Google update..

Yeah because people who purchased press releases for backlinks were all untouched amirite?

Seriously?

Google is putting the screws to just about everyone these days. This is why people have started using spin ready articles in the first place.

For me syndication works way better than spun content these days. They get indexed faster and they really help in ranking clients' websites. I am not against spinning at all, actually I am with everything that works and for me instead of creating say 10 web 2.0 with spin content i prefer creating 10 web 2.0 using 2 different articles - one on 5 web 2.0s, another one of 5 web 2.0.

Add 6-7 social bookmarks (not thousands of blog comments) to each web 2.0 and it takes days to have them all indexed in Google and also see the benefits in ranks.

I too was recently suggested to give content syndication a try. Looks like it does help but just the thought of duplicate content in my 1th tier is scary :D

Would be great if someone could give a clear explantion on how you properly syndicate without risking your site..

To those who syndicate content, do you ask for the author's permission first? If so, what is the best way to do that?

What author permission if the content is written from scratch? :S

Just an article with a video some people might want to check out. Duplicate content only applies to your site. Once it is on another website it is called syndication. But don't believe me, maybe you will believe the G engineer in the video. Google this topic and you will see many many pages talking about it all pointing to the same thing.

Syndacating content is best to be used for:
a)press releases(obviously)
b)doc sharing sites
c)slightly spun or no spun at all for descriptions on video sharing sites
d)niche related forums

The goal here is to create a footprint in a way that your content is worth reading and thus spread on different platforms word by word(copy-paste)!This is how you build a strong T1 foundation, instead of blasting AA nofollow blog links,etc.,etc. ...
Simple as that!

For my penneth worth I thought that the 'proper ' way to do it was this -

Syndication - Was done with an attribution to the source. So if you post an article and it gets 'syndicated' then an attribution would also be given to the article itself (i.e. a link)
Spinning - This is used as a shortcut way of getting out 'unique' content out on the net.

I could be wrong....
