The only things I do manually are things I can't automate.
Automation tools are there to help you duplicate your efforts on a larger scale.

Disadvantages of automatic:
#1: Sites where an automatic link can be placed will be surely overwhelmed with another automated links sooner or later and therefore lose their credibility, juicing, pose a risk etc.
#2: Automated links, even if pointed to higher tiers, will probably be very dangerous to your money site, since Google will be better and better at revealing tiers and even better in the overall link evaluating process.. You might not get caught even for years, but it will come one day. So be wise when deciding which is your main moneysite and how long do you think it will last etc.

either way, google does not favour white or black hat seo. Google favors backlinks that are posted by people who actually are not marketing the website. So when you really think about it, white and black hat are the same thing, attempts to fool google.

I don't really agree with you...
White hat is about creating great user experience e.g. superbly optimized site for the readers, good content and so on. I would say that G even loves white hat since it represents what it wants to achieve - internet full of unique and readable content.

Couldnt agree less with you. The only real disadvantage I honestly see in software though is the fact that you may not get relevant links. But if you really want to compete with another company. You either need software or hire someone.
