Why should I avoid PBNs for white-hat sites?

I always see a debate between PBNs and Guest Posts for long term link building.

Which one is the most powerful and long lasting in your opinion, and best for WH projects?

No AI sloppy answers, please…

For white-hat projects, PBNs are risky long-term. They can work short-term, but once detected, rankings can drop fast. Guest posts on real, niche-relevant sites are safer and build lasting authority. If you’re thinking long-term brand + stability, guest posting wins every time.

Google has started ignoring the link farm websites.

and because of a lot of outbound links and little to no traffic google is also ignoring most PBN networks. That's why you should avoid PBNs.

Where do you see that? I don’t see any recent update about that. Many OBLs are in real websites too, how would that be an indicator of spam? I agree that way too many links can raise a flag, but serious PBNs have a maximum of at least 20 OBLs. But still, spammy hacked Homepages with more than 20 OBLs are ranking casino sites, I don’t see why PBNs would not work for a WH project.

Also you are mixing things up. You asked what is safe for white hat sites. Not what is working now for sites.

OBL Count is not equal to Spam Signal - Yes
In this age of AI, google's system can easily identify which website is for which purpose.

Spam (casino/hacked pages) still ranks sometimes :

Serious PBNs have a maximum of at least 20 OBLs - Google can easily identify link graph and pattern. So it can differentiate between a pbn and a real site.


Hacked pages are ranked because they already have high authority from that legit domain. They eventually get cleaned and deindexed once google finds the exploit.


When we are working for white hat sites, we don't ask the question "Can it rank?”. We ask “Can it survive 2–3 core updates?”

Well built pbns beat guest posts because you actually own the links forever, with guest posts, random site owners can just delete your link or let their domain drop later on, if you take the time to build a clean pbn, you get total control over your rankings without wasting money on unpredictable webmasters.

And what would make a PBN different from a legit site? Wouldn’t that logic create many false positives and impact negatively legit websites because of poor structures?

Maybe my question was incorrectly phrased, but by safe I also meant working, clearly. I can get as many guest posts as I want, but they have to move rankings. And I don’t quite get how guest posts on the usual sites (medium, pdf sites, google pages) can move rankings; you’re telling me Google’s AI is smart enough to perfectly distinguish what’s a PBN and what’s not, but pass authority to sites from other sites with high DA but known mostly for being sold in crappy BHW backlinks packages?

real guest post sites are made to serve real users, the backlinks in those websites are a side product.

Google identifies the pattern.

a PBN consistently outbounds links to money sites and has similar anchor patterns,

a real website will have inconsistency, change in the ways content is written. links will appear in context of the text.

platforms like medium, pdf sites, google sites they pass very little value to be honest. I don't think i have seen a single website get ranked with these platforms alone. Most of us use them for diversity in backlink profile.

Around 2015-2016, i used to work for movies niche through parasites and guest post websites. And Google's backend system hit our niche, and it was filtering our parasites/guest posts in real time, deindexing them asap. If you think google's AI is not smart enough then you are wrong. It was able to identify our pattern through backlinks + platforms we were using and the the keywords we were using.

Regarding those crappy BHW backlinks packages, they might look like real sites, might have good traffic or DR. They are in the grey zone.

There aren't always two options.

You can go with niche relevant websites. You just have to hire a good seo to get those backlinks. Press releases. list sites. comparison sites. brand/website listing sites.

These altogether create a strong base of backlink profile and looks natural also.

as they are against googles tos - you risk damaging your
site if found to be using them. thats the risk we all take
