Why Ping my own Site(s)

Could someone explain to me why I should Ping my own Site.

I've read it a few times, that you should Ping your Site every once in a while.
Why is that? What does it do? Does google or any other SE see it as real traffic? And if so, how?
Sorry, might e a dumb newbie question, but I don't understand it.

to answer your question, pinging your site allows the G bot to crawl your site and index it if it is fairly new.
 
Well I've googled it quite a few times and I used the search function here as well, but never found an answer.

If I ping my Site it gets a Signal from my PC or from the Proxy between me and my Site. There is no Google Server between, so I don't understand why it makes sence.
 
You're thinking of the wrong kind of ping. Google "google ping service".
 
Pinging your site doesn't mean sending a signal to your site from your PC, you are getting it mixed up with ping for a video game.

Pinging means that you send a url to Google or another site, and then that site comes to look at the new content and index it.
 
yes By pinging your site google can crawl your site easily or Google can know that you have updated some information in your site.
 
yes I got it mixed up. I've read in quite a few forums something like: "Ping your Sites" and I thought it's meant to Ping my Site the way you can do it with Scrabebox. But this made no sense to me.

It is so funny when the brain keys in on something, no matter how simple the explanation is, your brain gets tunnel vision.. This happens to me, and I get locked into the easiest question, when you finally "see" the answer your like DOHH!!

It's all simple!
You ping your links to send a signal that there's an update on the page.
So it get crawled QUICKER !!
