I leave ooodesk because of poor jobs. People from some Asian countries are doing $20/hour job for only $3/hour and because of those people and their cheap hourly rates we don't get those jobs.
(Those cheapos came to BHW too)
I would like to know views of BHW users on cheap jobs and why people prefer them?

Some worth mentioning jobs posted in BHW:

Because my cheap VA's do better work than those that charge $14 an hour. I would much rather pay $1 an hour for 2x better work than $12 an hour for crap.

They get paid in US Dollars so depending on where they live it could work out to a lot for them.

Same could be said if you live in USA and you make money online. if you work online and live in NYC and make 4k per month that wont get you much. working online you can move were the cost of living is much lower and make 4k plenty.

Where do you get that good $1/hour VA? Even in my country, you'll only get some newbie.

    @OP
    I understand how your feeling
I live in one of what you call cheap labor country, but I won't take any job less than $10 per hours and it feels like insulted.
I can't eat rocks and am not live in a cave :)

Many Indians provide quality service with cheap prices. Indians are great. (I'm not Indian btw).
I think it depends on the living standard in each country. In my country in Asia, $2/hour (~$400/month) is not a small number.

Move to India and start working for $4 an hour is my advice. This is why a lot of people in IM move to places like Thailand and the Philippines, because they get more for their money. You cannot compete against them as their cost of living is so much less.

I love people asking for cheap ass work, and I love people doing cheap ass work.

The latter usually delivers what they're paid for (ex: $1/hr work, not $30/hr work) when the former expects the reverse. They then get pissed. They try again. And again. Eventually they get mad enough they come to people who actually price themselves according to their worth. They throw a temper tantrum, yell and say we're scamming blah blah blah were not worth it. They hire another shitty worker, they come back and I let them know the price increased by a certain amount due to being a possible risky client. They accept.

Low pay workers and high expectation clients don't mix for eachother. In the end the people who choose their clients win out over those who find customers. Of course this applies to coding only since that's what I do. For other jobs which are just straight up simple jobs I wouldn't be paying a premium. Not a chance I'm paying someone $10+/hr to copy+paste things when they would just outsource it anyways.

Though to answer the actual question, it's because of cost of living, competition and availability. I believe its cheaper to live in the largest Indian city than it is to live in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Melbourne etc.

I am guessing you are a VA on Odesk.

If you find them doing jobs you would do for 14/hr why don't you hire them to do the work you do for $14/hr?

You could expand your VA business by outsourcing the work to cheaper VA (that do even better work!)

$5 doesn't get you a good meal in the US. It gets you a great meal around the world for the whole week in certain places.

Unless you like portraying poor people as victims instead of people, it isn't slave labor any more than what happens with higher paying jobs with wages that haven't kept up with expenses, but these people still have bills and debts(to survive) to pay. You could argue the person making $60,000+ and is swallowed up by debt is the real slave here, with gold and silk chains.

Because 1 USD is worth over 30 INR. I guess that's simple enough because most of these cheap guys are from India. Can you blame them? Up your game, it's a an open market

Lets be clear, this is not slave labor. In every instance when I was looking for a VA I ask their rates. I pay what they ask if they can do the work I need.

This allows someone who is really good to find more work, because if you are good, people like me will use you over and over.

Sort of like lose money on every deal and make it up on volume.

I have a sister in law who will do directories submissions for mr of 10.00 an hour or a Va that will do the same job for me for 5. Since my sister in law lives in the US, 10 an hour is hardly worth her trouble, but my Va is making $2 more than she asked for, making solid revenue for her.

And what are you? Some unique snowflake that deserves to get jobs more than they do?

Things are really simple. If you can't compete on price, you better compete on quality. But of course that 's harder and requires more effort both in delivery and in getting positioned properly in the market, so you just prefer to bitch about it instead.

Some people just need money and they will do whatever there is to make money. I would do it too if I didn't have a better option.

What you do with $20, some do with $2 in their country. It would be stupid of them to set that high prices just because someone else does. It's competition and everyone tries to survive. They simply have the advantage of living in cheaper countries.
I'm in the middle, not living in India but not US either. I can live just fine here with $500 a month, but if i were in France i couldn't even pay my rent with those money.

Companies build factories in cheaper countries because they can pay the workers less. By your logic, they should pay a worker in Maroc the same salaries as one in UK, which is not how things work.

You just have to embrace the fact this won't ever change, and try to survive.

Like all other contracts, wages should be left to the fair and free competition of the market and should never be controlled by the interference legislatures

This is a perfect example of the current market and the mindset of the people using it. Your competition MAYBE cheaper but you should have more quality, exposure, excellence, and merit than they do. Also, if they are actually of some quality then you should at least outsource to them and save costs. The rules are very simple, all you need to do is follow them and you almost automatically make money ...

Nailed it right on the head. If your work is worth $20/hour, that's what you'll get paid. Also, this is global economics, either get with the program, or move over, because somebody else will take your spot in a heart beat.

    Exactly my point.

Add Pakistan, Philippines to that list too.

I am not VA on that site :)

I always compete on quality and a higher payout that's why I earn %xx more money then them by doing %xx less work. The reply you get even from Top tier countries is like "I can hire you on xx/hour (less than my hourly rate) because of the feedback you've over that x/hour freelancer" and I have to work on his hourly rate or leave that job.
