Why PBN as tier 2?

I've seen some people using web2.0 properties as tier 1, and PBN sites linking to those as tier 2. I'm just wondering why this would be better than using PBN sites as tier 1 going directly to money site? I'm thinking that since the web2.0s are more frequently used for spam, wouldn't it be better to just use PBN sites as tier 1? Or is it because of the high DA of web2.0, and getting a PA boost to that page would provide more link juice and value than a PBN site in itself?

My question in short: Why would you use PBN sites as tier 2 instead of tier 1?

Because if the PBN get penalized you can simply take off the Web 2.0 so it won't hurt your money site! If you have your own PBN and you know what you are doing you may direct your PBN links directly to the money site. Otherwise use a web 2.0

Do you mean it's a waste of money to use them as tier2 or to point them at the money site?

Some reasons off the top of my head might be:

1. the PBN domains are not relevant to the niche of the money site - using a web 2.0 might allow you to use niche relevant subdomains

2. should Google deindex some of your PBNs, your money site has a layer of protection that might prevent penalties being passed through (although I've yet to see clear evidence that deindexed PBN domains lead to Google penalties for the linked properties)

3. you can be more aggressive with your anchor texts pointing towards the web 2.0 before passing it through to the money site via a plain URL or branded link (I seem to remember this being touted as an effective solution on some tiered PBN product/service by matt/brad callen I think)

I think the first of these might be the biggest reason some people might be tiering things this way.

I've found some of my expired sites to have really high metrics but questionable links. They still carry a lot of link juice so I'd be paranoid about pointing them to my money site but I'm usually willing to pass the authority to my web 2.0s.
