I know SERP is based solely on backlinks; I'm wondering why I can't move up in the ranks though.

My competition isn't too stiff actually; they don't even know what SEO honestly. I've seen their backlinks; spammed AA blogs with PR0 mostly. They are 2 EMD sites with less than 10 less a piece (Links with PR0 on spa) and the other sites are like wikianswers/answers.

My site isn't updated anymore but it is 'on-page seo optimized' to the best of my ability (Content, images, tags, etc). I do NOT have an EMD since everything is taken (Except for the lesser known ones like .us/.info) and I have over 400 backlinks (Inlcuding a few .edus and SEVERAL sites that have PR 1+ (Over 50 I think)).

My question is, why can't I pass these people up? It's been around a month already and I'm stuck on the bottom of page 1/ top of page 2 which doesn't get me anything

:(

Something I'm missing? I would estimate around 80% of my links are no follow 20% follow and 5% are 'relevant' to my website.

Hey Matthew, I could suggest a few things:

1) You may not be able to see all of your competitions backlinks, link checkers are not always accurate.
2)Your page may be over optimised, if you haven't already, try to reduce your content kW density to ~1.5%. Also stale pages get left behind so you can also try to change it up a bit.
3)Your link portfolio may need more raw urls anchors
4) Try Social, just a little bit of twitter could be all you need. Actually if you use twitter and keep a recent tweet plugin onsite, your page will have different content therefore alleviating stale pages. Also tweets are raw urls so that could fix that problem for you.

Okay, I'll try to reduce the keyword density to less than 2%, change up my link portfolio (Currently at 99% 'keyword' /epic fail haha; still a noob I am), throw some bookmarking, and new content my page.

Since when does SERPs only have to do with backlinks? On-site is huge.

I know SERP is based solely on backlinks;

There's your problem. A few years ago yes but not now. Spend some time reading the boards here and you will learn that your statement is probably the reason you don't rank.

Yea I've been reading guides that must have been outdated then lol. Thanks for everyone's help.

who knows right now...google is loooooooooooocccccccccccccccccooooooooooooooo!

SERP does not solely depends upon backlinks or onsite seo , its a mixture of everything .

Friend, don't lose patience. hardly you have completed a month actually the turn around time is 2 to 4 months but still what you could do create blog posts that gives great boost up to your site rank.
Tip: Anchor Text should not be same as your Niche.

Today, SERP is not all about backlinks. We need to do a lot of things properly in proper time. Backlinking is a part (good part) of it.

I would say, on site is important to a point... definitely not huge though.
on site is huge after the new google update, in my opinion, google is looking for quality, non-spammy, websites to rank, so you need good, organized quality displayed the way google likes it.

Post a unique article for once in a 3 months, That help me to jump top in rankings

Check your on page SEO and Diversify your links. Other than that I cant give much advice without seeing some decent statistics.

You know dude google is very unpredictable :) Sometimes you go up sometimes we go down.
