I'm trying to pick a username for my channel and now the ONLY way it seems to do that is by forcing you to join Google+

Is there any way around this? I hate Google+ and don't want any part of it.

You CAN create a new username for YouTube, just go to this link: http://m.youtube.com/menugrid it's YouTube's "My Account" page (mobile version) then go to "Profile Set Up" and create your YouTube account without creating Google Plus account.Hope it helped.

Because G+ is otherwise floating in the great sea of social media and Youtube is their greatest hope to revive it.

Hmm that doesn't seem to work. That link didn't take me anywhere. Just to a list of videos.

Google needs a new form of advertisement for Google+ and YT seems like to best way to advertise it so why not? You can total ignore the Google+ page there's no need to take care of it in any way.

I love it that you can now create YT channels over Google+ accounts, because there are no restrictions whatsoever on the names you can choose. Want a video that somebody watermarked with their channel name? Just copy paste their username and BAM you got the same username. Want to drive traffic to whatever? Steal the username and avatar of a famous YouTuber and make it top comment on one of their own videos. It´s pretty neat.

Yea, 'now forcing'. I used YT a few months ago and was able to make a username just fine without having to join Google+ crap. Now, if I want to change my username it makes me have a Google+ account. So annoying.

Delete/dezactivate your google+ profile and try to find the button "click here to use your business name"
