why is this happening?

Basically I bought a niche site and it was fine going up few ranks per week it got to the top of page to then it randomly overnight fell to page 5, last few days it managed to get back to page 4 today I wake up and its on page 8? the over parts of the niche blog are ranking higher in google then the landing page I don't understand how a disclaimer page etc that has miniscule info on can rank higher then the site itself? what's going on?
