I see most of my friends using and mentioning about reddit too often. I have also used it but could not understand the reason behind so much craze especially among the Non IM related audience.
Why is reddit so popular in India?

i noticed india subreddits started showing on the front page due to H1-B incident with musk/trump, so people naturally looking an indian content which drove up engagement way up

Reddit thrives because its community driven and niche focused. People love it for honest discussions, memes, advice, and news unlike other social platforms, it’s less about followers and more about being part of a community that actually shares your interests.
Yes, it gives more independence to users. Most of the other platforms are very strict if you share something against their rules. But reddit gives chances to users. One can share his opinion freely.

Reddit seems to be quickly occupying the niche that old forums used to, ie. a place where people can connect and discuss all kinds of things, in long form if they want, and while being completely anonymous. I think their only real competitor in a similar space is Quora, but I'm not sure that they're doing so well these days (last I heard they're overrun with AI slop).
There are always going to be a large number of people (not only in India but all over) who're looking for deeper and more meaningful interactions on social media and trying to make real connections and friendships with people; Reddit is perfect for this.
Also, India has one of the largest groups of Internet users that speak English, so it's only a matter of time before they're among the top represented nationality on all English-speaking social media (if they aren't already there that is). Reddit know this well and are cleverly promoting more to Indian users. One example is they have a new line of avatars based on Indian themes, costumes etc.
