Why is my hosting using up so much resources?

I asked my hosting support and they just said 'check your logs'.

That doesnt help much.

I don't know what I'm looking for? and how do I solve?

I looked at them a bit and most of the usage seems to be coming from my twitter redirects- 50 adult accounts redirecting through a domain to aff link. I only get about 700 traffic a day though.

Also my two 'real' websites are extremely slow. Why is that?

In the stats part on the left part of cpanel apparently around 1/4 memory is in usage and 10/20 entry processes. I also keep getting emails saying I went over x amount of times in a 24 hour period causing y amount of errors when accessing sites.

Please advise how to diagnose and solve.

What exactly do you have as a hosting platform?
What for you use it (hosting for several web-sites and ?...)
Attach your logs.

If you are using wordpress just install wp super cache.Also you can try to stop useless bots from crawling your site.That uses a lot of resources too.

I have two pinterest basic adsense sites with only a few pages.

and a couple of domains routing tumblr and twitter traffic.

What logs do I need to add? not used to this stuff. what panel in cpanel etc?
 
Just installed wp super cache and didn't seem to make a jot of difference in terms of speed :(
 
hmmm thats strange why is the page blank when i right click and view source on both the sites i installed super cache on?

hmm it did do it then after a few tries. just extremely slow I guess.

It may not have an effect of speed but it will most probably prevent you getting you account banned by your hosting provider=) . The problem can be about your hosting provider too though. If they give you low bandwith u can't do anything about speed. Yes you can also add a CDN like cloudflare.com too. It may help. About the plugin you can search for spyder,crawler stopping plugins there are paid and free ones.
 
When you say sites are slow, where abouts are you and where abouts are the sites? If you are in say Australia and the sites are on US servers then yup, expect some slowness.

What hosting provider are you with - are they cramming a server with accounts, do they monitor the servers for abusers who are using more than they should? Are you spending pennies on hosting and expecting the world?

If their support is coming back with 'check your logs' I would instantly back up your sites and get the shit out of dodge.
 
Well there was never a problem with speed before it has only just started happening since I am getting the resource limit thing in the past few weeks or so and I've been with them maybe two years.

I guess it's related to the tumblr/twitter traffic because the other site I'd had for over a year now and not updated it for maybe 6 months. Its only the tumblr/twitter domains that are new, although maybe theres some marginally more traffic to the website I just mentioned.

As I said I'm not getting very much traffic from there so maybe it is twitter crawler or something? How to find out?

It is suppsed to be unlimited and in the same country as me.

Nothing is unlimited - its just a marketing gimmick. If anyone can find me a hard drive that never fills up or a unlimited bandwidth with no restrictions I would be a happy man.

Who is the provider - you say its been okay and now started going downhill, has the host been taken over by someone like EIG, thats their little trait. Buy a decent host and trash it :)

What have you done in the last few weeks - if you have been there 2 years without a problem, identify anything you have changed in the last few weeks. Have you added extra sites, what kind of sites, basic HTML, wordpress etc? If Wordpress is everything uptodate and so on.
 
There is no "unlimited hosting". They will give you unlimited traffic but they will limit your Bandwidth to 1 Mb then your site will be slow as hell. Also i agree with fatboy if you got 2 warnings or more i would started backing up my sites ASAP.

You say the problem happened after you add those 2 sites. Of course you won't have any problems with sites with no traffic or no photos/videos. The problem starts after you have traffic=)
 
I am with eva hosting who do a bhw offer on here at 2.49 a month.

I am tight for cash as always so haven't complained at that price for unlimited domains. Usually I found it would be a tenner or more.

Im not sure what has changed really. How do I check the logs to see what is causing the issues. I usually avoid web/hosting based stuff and just set and forget but seems its time for an autumn clean :D
 
To be honest, if you only have a shared account you won't see a lot from the basic logs something like cPanel will give you. The most you will get is info on people visiting you (access log) and the last 300 errors (if any) dropping out of your site.

You won't be able to check things like MySQL logs to see if there is a slow query or something hanging everything up - however, their support WILL be able to get this information as they control the node you are on (I am only assuming you have a shared account?)

I am going offline in about 10 minutes but if you want me to have a quick look at the logs to see if there is anything obvious showing in the log I can in the morning (I am in the UK for timezone purposes). Unless there is a big error I doubt there will be anything worthwhile to see but its worth a go but I would go back and ask them to look at things such as MySQL logs for you - you pay them so they should support you!

Thanks. It's actually being nice and fast now. So wonder if it's a time of day thing and/or adding the supercaching has had some effect.

It's unlimited bandwidth and domains, but it's never unlimited server resources. Once you start using too much CPU or RAM, your provider will get upset and eventually tell you you need to upgrade to better hosting.
 
Yes I get that but unlimited domains is still good in that the last one I was with I only got two I think and had to pay for more.
 
Take a look at the scripts you might be using. Some of them exhaust resources.
