Why is it so important to have your own website?

Why can't I make a blog that brings in good income with a free blogging site?

One of the reasons people say is because you don't control it and the site can bring your site down at any time but you could say that about anything. Paypal could freeze your account at anytime.

Except that doesn't happen to most people.

But yeah, I was just wondering why everyone recommends to have your own site?

They are two different situations. Paypal is just a service provider and you can switch any time.

A free blogging site can put you out of business when they like. But having your own site means you own your domain and nobody can do that.
 
It's important because you have full control of your site. you can optimize for adsense, even you can sell it.

It's equal to your house. how if you live into other person house. What you feel than? Does it have different feeling if you live in your own house?

One reason is that Google may give you a better search ranking if you have a good domain name (ie. related to your keyword, exact match for a keyword, age)
 
Try it out for yourself.

Take the time to build a great blog on blogger. Put in the effort of posting great articles.

Then make one mistake, and *poof* .... blog is gone.

Rinse / Repeat / Scale it up to make no money.
 
The main advantage is the independence of having your own presence on www and not being anyone's free guest.

something you can call your "own" don't build more money up for google I believe they have enough
 
free sites are slow, way too often not reachable and there are too few plugins you can use for improving your seo
 
you can make a website for free, or pay someone to make you one. there's no reason why you should want to use a free blogging system unless your cheap. if you need to justify getting a website for your business ideas then your going to have some major problems in this industry. wish you best of luck
 
You can. No one will stop you. If you use a free blogging program then make sure you build multiple sites across many accounts and platforms to minimize the risk. My personal opinion is that you should have as many pages across as many properties (including self hosted sites and web 2.0s and free blogging platforms and social networks) targeting as many keywords as possible. If you're only building one site though, a free blogging platform is not your best option.
 
Though they've stated most of the reasons I'll still state that you need your own website for
1) to get accepted into major cpa companies
2) to buld trust when selling your products or services, many wont use your services or buy your goods if you are on a free or for that matter strange dot like(.co.cc,.me,)
3) to optimize your adsense with good ad placement.

There are a ton of SEO reasons and quite a few other reasons.

One of the most persuasive reasons is very simple.

Which would you consider a business that you will spend you money at?

Which do you think, or believe your customer will think, is a real business?

No offense to anyone, but you cannot be serious about IM and think you do not need a website of your own. This is like saying I am going to run a professional car repair shop under the shade tree in the back yard, instead of renting a service facility.

You can think you are a professional auto mechanic all you want, everyone else will consider you a shade tree mechanic at best.

You are NEVER going to be thought of as a professional, and you will never be able to demand professional rates.
 
All the above, and at most, you only have to pay like $15 for the domain and a year of hosting. If you can't make that back in a year, it's time for a new hobby/job...

I agree. Its pretty simple to re-coup this money back. And if anything, you should be able to make some money before 2 years of hosting is up.

I have a very decent site running on blogger, my main income source as well.
Although one of my blogs was already removed, I'm not too worried.
I've backed up all my posts and stuff already so if they do decide to screw me over, I won't lose much. I'm only with blogger because I like the design I have with that site :P
 
Well, it is good to start off with a free website such as blogger but if you actually want to get ranked or get accepted into any CPA you should get your own website.

That won't matter, you can put a custom domain on blogger and it's as good as "your own" site. Only downside is that blogger takes sites down quite easily. Even a scrapebox blast can be deadly, mine got taken down for "spam" after a 10k AA blast, some blog owner probably reported it.

Worst reason ever. Blogspot lets you use a custom domain and I'm quite sure wordpress does as well...

I am referring to owning the whole site rather than the free version of it. I just assumed people would be intelligent enough to realize this. OP asked about free solutions vs. paid solutions. Using a custom domain on a wordpress.com account is still a free solution. Please try again.
