I think it's for marketing and market share. Also to continue to gather data for LLM training.

they prob offer it free to hook more users or flex market share. not always about instant cash could be long game vibes or backed by some nonprofit or big funding

Chatgpt relies on businesses using it, no users, through their API. Everything AI you see ( Chatbots , supports, bots, etc) are all people who payed for their API

They are training the models on free users. And if they switched to only paid, they would instantly lose 80% of the customer base. Which would wreck the stock.

free tier pulls mass data, keeps the loop active, and feeds feedback for training. it ain’t charity, it’s smart funnel. get users in, upsell later. openai playin long game, not just quick gains.
