So, question in the title but a little context first...

Few days ago I got nostalgic and wanted to re-watch some of the movies of the 90s (the GREATEST era - yes, in ALL CAPS - of movies EVER), and so I randomly started with the Bad Boys movie that I remember to have liked back then but which I've forgotten most about.

And so I went on to download BB and re-watch it. And so I did...

And then I rekindled my taste for such masterpieces and remembered that there was also a BB 2, and so I went and downloaded and re-watched that one too.

And then I got insatiable and went on a searching spree only to find out that there are also parts 3 and 4 of the Bad Boys franchise. Of course, I went on to download and re-watch those 2 parts, too.... I watched the last part (part 4) last night as I made a habit of watching one movie per day, but last night I finished the series and now - as I was about to start watching a new movie - I realized that I've run out of BB movies to watch :D

Which brings me to the context of this post...

As I sat down, thinking about which movies have gotten good recommendations in the last 5-10 years I realized that the modern-day movies have been so cringe, political and watch-unworthy that I couldn't remember a single one of them that I wanted to watch (which is probably why I keep going back to the movies of the 90s decade, but I digress...)

So, in the absence of a good title to keep feeding my craving for good, quality, low thinking pew-pew action movies with renown actors, I realized that there's not a single title that's come out recently (in the last 5-6 years) that even remotely calls out to me in some way.

So, on I went to "mighty" google with their uber, ultra, mega, awesome technology and intent matching and personalization crap and all of that to recommend me something in the "pew-pew, you're dead" genre and lo and behold the garbage that I found. Like, utter, insane, abhorent GARBAGE everywhere...

First of all, out of all of the 10 sites on 1st page of google for the keyword "best movies of 2024" (and yes, I chose 2024 because I saw that Bad Boys 4 came out in 2024, and so I thought "well, if 2024 is the year when mankind started going back to the old ways of doing things maybe there are more quality movies that have come out in 2024, so probably that's a good year to start searching for more epic movies"...)

So, as I was saying... 10 sites on google's 1st page for the keyword "best movies of 2024" and out of those 10 sites 1 was a YT video (which I obviously had no interest in as I'm only looking for short lists of quality pew-pew action movies with famous actors, I don't care about any god-damn YT video explaining me in chapters what the video is about and all of that crap)

So anyway, out of those 9 sites remaining, 7 of them had lists of "top 20 movies of 2024", the 8th site had a list of top 50 movies, and the 9th site (rotten-something, I don't remember the name of the site, nor do I want to remember it for how garbage it is) had no top [whatever], it just had an infinite scroll and I stopped scrolling after not finding a single quality movie in the first 120 that I checked.... but anyway, the absolutely insane part of all of this is yet to come, and it's this...

.... on ALL of these sites, and ALL THE WAY up to 100, there is NOT A SINGLE mention of Bad Boys 4 (Bad Boys - Ride or Die by its real title) ANY-F**KING-WHERE. Like, WTF is this s*it?

Not only that, but the movies that are in the top [whatever] of [whichever garbage site] that's on google's 1st page is also garbage as f**k, not even kidding. I saw the titles, I then checked the producer, then checked the actors, and with the exception of a couple of titles that featured a few tier 2 (yes, tier 2 as deemed by ME, get over it!) like Ralph Fienes, Jude Law, Zendaya and other crappy actors that I have no interest in, or appreciation for... absolutely NOT A SINGLE quality title or actor anywhere to be found, not even in top 50.

Again, what in the actual f**k is this? Not to mention that all sites (except for IMDB) were forcing me to make 2 full "above the fold" type of scrolls until I got to the next title in the list that wasn't even really a list but more like a mini-blog post.... It's like the entire page 1 of google is filled with garbage sites that nobody's heard of and which are all copy-cats of each other, all of them displaying the same utter trash (and yes, I don't give a f**k about Dune 2, I've never cared for, or ever watched Dune 1, why the F would I watch Dune 2? Give me a break with garbage movies, only "pew-pew, you're dead" movies like Bad Boys are worth watching for me at this moment, everything else is uninteresting and don't want to hear a word about...)

So, besides the fact that google is utter trash with their intent matching and ultra high quality content and whatever other bogus mirage of a SEO criteria they have, the most perplexing fact for me was that a quality movie (well, if we consider action movies to be quality movies, but that's a discussion for another time) like Bad Boys 4 is NOT in top 100000000 of any god damn site on page 1 of google. And the worst of all, it's not even in top 20 movies of 2024 for IMDB either, which is absolutely bonkers if you asked me...

So anyway (and despite of this long rant), can someone recommend a quality "pew-pew, you're dead, we don't need to think here, just pew-pew everyone into the grave!" that's made in the last 5-6 years that's on par with what's come out in the 90s? I really crave a quality action movie like Bad Boys, Independence Day, Heat, etc... and I can't find a single title in google.... well, I don't even know what to look for either as I've been out of touch with the movie industry for at least half a decade, so... if any of you has kept in touch with this industry and can recommend something worth watching AND which also has actors that were famous in the 90s - early 2000s, for the love of God, let me know cause I need to start watching an action movie soon (in 2 hours or so), but I ain't got none because of reasons (garbage google, garbage movie industry, garbage sites)

Rant over, and thanks in advance for any quality recommendation!

The way I read this is almost like you're in front of me ranting about all this : D

Checking lists of movies from Google isn’t really ideal for me as well
Most of those sites are probably just copying one another or maybe they used AI to write those posts, so the likelihood of the posts looking similar is high

I would still recommend watching a video of someone’s personal recommendations for a particular year of movies you’re looking for.
That would feel more personalized and you could find something genuine that way

If I could recommend you pew pew movies from years back that you won’t regret, it would be Denzel pew pew movies : D
I love me any Denzel movie anyway

Check The Equalizer series.... Oh, you would love "2 Guns" too : )

that's by design :p

100%, man! I am pretty sure they're copycats of each other, maybe Bad Boys 4 is not the best movie of 2024, but not even in top 50? Not even as an honorable mention? Like, wtf are we doing then? Are we even movie-ing, or what?

I would still recommend watching a video of someone’s personal recommendations for a particular year of movies you’re looking for.
I'm not interested in a particular year, I just want to catch up with the movies industry that I've ignored (for good reason, apparently) since 2020 or so... I don't care if the movie is made this year, or even 50 years ago (well, I'm exaggerating a little, but you get the idea), I just want to watch a no-thinking, action-packed movie the likes of Bad Boys cause I've watched all 4 BB movies over the last 5 days and now I got a taste for this type of action-comedy movie with famous actors. That's all I want, I don't care about the year, so I guess suggest me any action-packed, or action-comedy-packed movie that's with famous actors before I get triggered and start researching all of the big action-movie actors of the 90s and go through their entire lists of movies 1 by 1 and handpick whichever movie I want to watch.

I will do this, but this will be my last resort, I want to relax and unwind now, I don't care about doing heavy, time consuming research, which is why being let down (once again) by the "almighty" google with the ultra sharpshoot-y and personalization technology that can't recommend a quality movie for my taste infuriated me so much that I had to make this rant...

If I could recommend you pew pew movies from years back that you won’t regret, it would be Denzel pew pew movies : D
that's funny, because a few weeks ago I DID go through DW's entire movies list and I downloaded 4-6 of them that I've never watched, or which I've rewatched but have forgotten about, so DW is cleared as of now :)

But yeah, feel free to recommend what you've liked / what you feel I would like, it's still better than me having to manually go though all famous action-movie actors of the 90s and check their long-ass lists of movies 1 by 1 and doing research on each one of those movies to see whether or not I remember their synopsis so I can watch / re-watch, and etc... So feel free to recommend something that you like / you think I'd like...

I love me any Denzel movie anyway
speaking of which... Have you watched Deja-Vu, Manchurian Candidate, and Fallen? Fallen is a bit older movie, but it's so good, and I can't believe that I've never watched it until recently (a month or so ago)

Check The Equalizer series.... Oh, you would love "2 Guns" too : )
I did watch the 1st Equalizer, and I've liked it. I don't remember of subsequent ones, though so I guess I'll start with those. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Never heard of 2 Guns, I'll check that one too... Thanks!

I don’t know if I can think of any right now... but maybe Shelter (Jason Statham).

I haven’t seen the movie but my brother watched it at the cinema last week and said it was nice and action packed so maybe you could check that out.

Also, if you're a fan of Jason, then you might automatically like it

Again, I haven’t seen it though not even watched a trailer. This is based on WOM : D

I'm onto it...

well, I enjoyed The Transporter series... A LOT! So, I guess you could say I'm a fan, and I remember that I've also watched Cellular because of that, and also Crank or something (I don't remember the exact title but Jason was on a dope of some kind and he had acted nervous the entire movie, which is hilarious)

So yeah, he's got good movies... But haven't watched (or even heard of) Shelter, so I'll add it to my list...

all good, man! I appreciate the recommendations :)

Also, I said yesterday that I've cleared out Denzel's movies list, but I (unintentionally) lied, because - what I did in fact - is that I've only checked his 90s - 2000s movies, but after 2010 he's had a few other good ones that I somehow forgot about, or didn't think to check out.

But last night I mended this oversight, and so I ended up downloading 3 more that I've not watched before... well, 2 actually, because 2 Guns was your suggestion. But the other 2 that I've downloaded are Safe House (which I watched last night and it was crazy good), and The Book of Eli, which I'll watch tonight... or maybe tomorrow if I watch Shelter tonight, I will see what the vibes say :)

Yeah, they don´t do the same kind of movies like in the 80s, 90s, or 00s,
A lot of macro-level emotions are added to current films. Which in many ways spoil the film. For the majority, film is entertainment, not the processing of emotions. Those films are in many ways spoiled by too much emotion.

Commando:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088944/
Total Recall:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100802/
The Rock:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117500/
Twilight Saga: ;)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1099212/
Die Hard Saga:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095016/

But yeah, I definitely recommend starting to watch the Stargate series:
https://www.imdb.com/find/?q=stargate&ref_=tt_nv_srb_sm
1 Episode each day before going to sleep! ou yeah!!

not a fan of Arnie, so I'll skip Commando and Total Recall (this one was very good, though, I enjoyed it, it's just that I'm not in mood to rewatch it at the moment...)

The Twilight movie, bleah, not a fan of that emo crap, that's for young brainwashed kids, if I want vampire movies I watch Blade (with Wesley Snipes). Thanks for the recommendation, though, much appreciated :)

Die Hard is a fun trilogy (or I think there were 4 movies in the series, I don't remember) ... Also, your Die Hard link doesn't open up for some reason, but if this is the Bruce Willis series then I already know it, and have watched them many times, so I'll skip them for now...

The Rock, however... now that's a movie that I remember to have enjoyed thoroughly back then, and which I've forgotten most of, so I guess this one gets on my list...

Stargate is a series, and I'm not interested in that, but again, thanks for the recommendation, you couldn't know what I want / don't want to watch, so no problem :)

Haha, I feel you. Google and those “top movies” lists have gone full trash mode lately. Bad Boys 4 deserves way more love. It’s pure pew-pew nostalgia gold. If you want something recent with that 90s or early 2000s action vibe, try Nobody or Extraction. Fast, fun, and still missing the old Bad Boys chemistry, though. :)

try Nobody or Extraction
can you give years of release, or main actors? I feel that if I search for these words only I won't find the movies given how idiotic google are...

All this talk about action movies and not one mention of Mad Max: Fury Road. Which is not only one of the greatest action movies ever made but one of the greatest movies ever made, irrespective of genre. BHW's Chief Film Snob™ is not impressed.

is this the last one in the series? I mean, I did watch the entire movies (4 or however many there have been), and all of them are great! But I'm not in mood for MM right now.... besides, Mel is the OG of this series, I've had a hard time getting behind Tom Hardy (I believe that's the main actor of the last MM) as the protagonist... but I still liked the movie eventually, so this one's checked...

Keep the recommendations coming... I have about 1 TB of HDD space to fill with movies :)

is this the last one in the series?
No, they made a spin-off called Furiosa a couple of years ago. It was excellent as well.

I don't think it's quite right to say 'they don't make 'em like they used to' when it comes to action films. You could say that about many genres of films or any other art. Things are just different now.

There have been lots of really good action films made in the last 20 years or so. Someone mentioned the Extraction films with Chris Hemsworth - those are both excellent. The two Nobody films are really good. Jason Statham never misses and Shelter was really good. The two Sisu films are full of action - although I didn't care much for the first one. The second one was much better.

Nobody has mentioned John Wick either - the whole series is amazing and the spin-off Ballerina was really good, too. Scott Adkins has made a lot of good low budget stuff - One Shot, One More Shot and Diablo are good among quite a few others.

The Wrecking Crew recently came out on Prime, that was a really good time. These are just off the top of my head. There are loads more.

So sorry that you have such a bad taste in movies
goes both ways, mate :)

I did see Furiosa but it's not calling out to me for some reason... maybe in the future...

hmm, I think I've watched all of them that are up my alley until 2013 or so... so, probably I've missed good ones in the last 12 years only, which is why I've created this thread (to get recommendations on what I've missed)

ok, so I'll check these out then. Thanks!

what's Sisu? Producer, actor, movie title?

Nobody has mentioned John Wick either - the whole series is amazing and the spin-off Ballerina was really good, too.
not for me, sorry! I did watch the 1st John Wick and it didn't call out to me even though I've watched it until the end. But I can tell you this much: the reason I kept watching is because the fuckers have killed his dog, and as a dog lover and owner myself (I have 2 lovely doggos, one dumber than the other :D ) I kept watching just to see him avenge his poor fluff ball. But otherwise I'm not a big fan of JW...

And with the 2nd and 3rd (cause I believe there was a 3rd JW movie recently) I just saw the title and went like "yeah, I'll pass on this one, but you go kill those mofos again... poor doggos"

Scott Adkins has made a lot of good low budget stuff - One Shot, One More Shot and Diablo are good among quite a few others.
I don't like him... although he's been great in IP Man, that role had suited him well for some reason :)

The Wrecking Crew recently came out on Prime, that was a really good time.
I'll check it out, thanks!

These are just off the top of my head. There are loads more.
well, keep 'em coming if you remember them, I wanna grab as many titles as I can that I've not watched before, so now's the right time to let your inner movie buff out :)
