Why .info domains suck

I had owned an EMD.info for a full year...it had done nothing for me. The site is a small niche product, and basically consists of a wordpress site, with product names for each post, with a picture and a unique description of each product...250 + words...good content. The site is whitehat. It has plenty of good links, and should have been doing much better from my experience.

I got sick of it under performing... 5-10 visitors a day....no long tail keywords at all, not even product names that were real low search kws that i was using for titles., and basically was getting a few visitors for ranking page 4 for the main EM keyword...my .com,.net and .org domains all do much better than this site...and I guessed it was because the whole .info thing, but wanted to be sure.

On the weekend highlighted in the image, I decided to buy a brandable .com...not keyword rich....I move the site over to the new domain, permanently forward all pages...and look at the image for the results...the site still has a long way to go to even recover my investment in getting content written.The site has gone from getting 5-10 a day to getting 25-30, and is growing. I haven't added any new posts, or done anything other than forwarding the site from a .info to a .com.

So honestly...never buy .info domains...even EMD's aren't worth it.

did you get a higher PR or do you think users are just suspicious of .info
 
I don't know if this is just me or not, but
for some reason I hate the .info domain extension,
it just seems useless to me, I have to agree owning
an EMD .com or is more appealing to your viewer's
eyes.
 
Very interesting. Especially since the new domain is not keyword rich at all. What was the PR of the .info? Most likely the branded domain is better for click throughs and the PR of the .info gave the .com the ranking boosts. Combined better click through improvement and PR pass to new domain must be why sounds like.
 
Great post. Thats a really nice case study. I've always known .info's are horrible for SEO but its nice to see graphic proof!

Not Really. I used to own a bodybuilding site on an .info domain, and guess what, is used to rank way better than other older .net and .com domains.
My take is that the content in this cases makes the difference.
I've always written manually my articles, and they ranked pretty good, especially if the site received natural links.
Moreover, i have an EMD .info domain which is 30 days old, and it is already on the 14th position.
From my experience, I can't say that these domains are bad at all.
 
hmmm. At first I was unsure about infos. I actually bought a whole bunch a short while
back and built up sites on two of them. I ran a month of SENukeX and it still isn't even top 100 on google. Its 35 on bing and yahoo at last check. It must be the info, but could also be the content. It was basically a squeeze page used to capture leads, with 2 articles on them each. So i guess it's hard to say, maybe I'll have an update on them soon. We'll see what happens.
 
Are you sure you didn't change anything else? There is a lot of factors in SEO, it could be just a coincidence. Sure it's interesting but for reliable conclusion you would need a bigger sample than one domain.
 
If you are going to concentrate on SEO go with .com or .net. The main issue with .INFO domains is not with SEO / etc .... its with other users. Most will not see you as credible. Its all about branding and image, and if you ever decide to sell - .INFO's don't go for nearly as much.
 
hey! i liked that screenshot of improvements in traffic.. i don't know about you but i was having around 5 .info domains.. and one of them is still getting 50 visitors a day!! i stopped working on it from around 6 months!!!

so, i don't think its issue with .info!

may be you need to check those keyword targeted and also those keywords which are getting traffic before you bought .com extension!
 
ANY domain extension will suck if you have no fucking clue what you're doing, .info included.

Agreed, my money's on coincidence as well.

Well IMO domain extensions does not play any role in ranking except Local extensions like .au, .in, .co.uk. I am completely disagree with your statement that .info can not rank well in SERP. I have seen hundreds of domain ranking #1 for VERY VERY VERY Competitive keywords from last 5+ years. I am not gonna disclose all of them but some of them are leader in their respected industry, so by disclosing their domain won't affect them.

1) www.prchecker.info ranking for three major and very very strong competitive keywords. The keywords are "Google PageRank Checker" ,
"Google pr checker" , "PR checker" (without quotes)

2) www.best-free-web-hosting.info ranking #1 "BEST Free Web Hosting" (without quotes) from so many years.

So moral of the story:

1) Add good and lot of content to your websites.
2) Create your website authority by strong SEO and SMO campaign.

I was in the replica biz 9 years ago or so, had a .info, was ranked#1 for chanel replicas and chanel nicole richie, i sold $5k a month on that site
I had no more than 50 sunglasses on it and only sold about 4% of my total inventory sold. people didn't care that it was .info.
 
info domains are pretty cheap so its used by many ppl just for spamming purpose
thats why its always ranked low in google
 
I am not saying .info's won't rank, I am saying they suck, and are not worth it...and I ran a small experiment to help draw my own conclusion.... Sure it's not a large sample... Sure it's a site I haven't paid a lot of attention to... But it's some graphic evidence...the increase in traffic is due to the site actually ranking for some long tail kws...when it was .info it wasn't pulling any....I like the theory about increased click through because of the more brandable .com though.
 
True, .info's generally suck but one use I've found
is for private sites that you DONT want to be indexed.

I use them in my reputation monitoring biz

I don't have any proof other than my experience
But
i am sure you are aware of the recent change in co.cc domains
Google deindexed all the co.cc domains just because these domains were used for spamming purpose

and have some manners to talk
its just a discussion not a war that you are using such language
