Why Does Price Consolidate?

Say the market trend for a coin (or a stock) is upwards. Prices go up but then the prices consolidate for a bit even going down a little before picking up and continuing on the upward trend. My question is: why do prices consolidate after going up and even dipping a little before going back up?
