Why does my website have high bounce rate?

I am looking for opinions about why do I have such a high bounce rate for my site trailers dot to
I get around 5k visitors per day, but very few of them stay. My bounce rate is 70%-80% and average engagement time: 1m (which is quite low for a movie website)

However, those that do stay, spend in average 90m on site (watching movies) and around 8 page views per session. I get around 500 movies viewed per day (probably from returning users), out of 5k total visitors.

What am I doing wrong?
Is my website slow? Is it unintuitive? Too complicated to use?

I'd appreciate any suggestion.

Keep in mind, that we can't answer any of those questions without statistics of the link its self.

Do you have popups on your site? That might cause high bounce rate.
 
Have a look at your competitors on similarweb.com, see which one have high bounce rate and which one have low bounce rare.
As simple as that: Copy what others are doing.

Can you also explain what harm can advertising my link on public forum can do to my website?

Before I started this site, I knew that my competition has high bounce rates. And I thought it's because of the popups and ads. Therefore, I've made a website without any popups and ads. However, it seems the bounce rate is similar to theirs. So now I'm not sure what's really causing it.

Well you asked the following questions.

Is my website slow? Is it unintuitive? Too complicated to use?

Website slow - How can we give you an answer if you don't provide a speed or the website?
Unintuitive / Complicated - Again, we can't give you an answer if we don't know your website, it would be guessing.

Bounce rates / Average times can vary based on users or technical issues, it's practically impossible to advise without knowing your website.

What harm can posting your website on a public forum do? People can try to brute force your password and hack it, especially since it has 5k users a day. They could also launch negative SEO attacks on it. This is an SEO forum where people know how to do that with ease. You could even get DDOS attacked by utter knobs....

I did provide the website: trailers dot to

Why would people do that? That's a lot of resources wasted for an unpopular site. But anyway, the site is well protected and I don't mind risking if that means I will learn.

I didnt see it, my mistake.

I'm still unable to see the link to your website.

How are you getting traffic? In specific details. Untargeted traffic can cause high bounce rates.

"trailers dot to" means https://trailers.to

I'm getting traffic mainly with posts on social media. It's not really untargeted. They are links in the context of "watch movie XYZ". People click my links to watch movies and for some reason they leave fast.

I just did a quick analysis, lovely site design. Not spammy. So I was confused as to why they are leaving.

I then thought "Let me do what a user would do"

So I clicked a movie, and tried to skip the intro of it, as I normally do (Who wants to watch an intro)

The movie loaded incredibly fast, however when I tried to skip it to 2 minutes into the movie, it took literally 50 seconds to buffer. Ain't no one on social media got the attention span for that.

I then clicked on a different movie, and couldnt play it as it had the error "The media could not be loaded, either because the server of network failed or because the format is not supported"

As a user, that would be me finished, never to return again.

For context, I have the Samsung s10 plus, with fibre optic broadband and 4g. The issue is definitely server side.

Sort the technical issues, it will drive people away 100% never to return.
 
P.S, yes although your posts are targeted on social media, normally people don't go from a quick browse to an hour long movie.

They have to have the intent to watch the movie before hand, so I wouldn't recommend social media for movies. That's why movie clips are going viral on Facebook, because they are 5-10 minutes long. Enough for our attention span.

I would not in a million years personally go from browsing social media to watching a full movie.

Very good insights.
However, in the first case, you didn't really bounce, did you.

But indeed, it makes sense, both your observations.
 
Install a tool like hotjar / luckyorange to see customer flow and see where it goes wrong. Make correct adjustments and go from there.

In the sense that I started from the home page no, but if you link directly to a movie, they will most likely bounce after the buffer issue, I doubt many people have an attention span to watch the introduction, they will most likely skip it and face the buffer issue and bounce straight away,

I'd have to see your exact social media posts to provide more accurate advice though.

The buffering issue was probably because you had to register to continue, but that message never appeared. Now it should be solved.
And I've already implemented hotjar heatmaps and feedback form as @mconur suggested, so let's see from here.

About the social media posts - I'm not in charge of that, my marketing is, so I couldn't tell you much about it, nor can I point you in any direction. But I actually tend to believe there's a great deal of untargeted audience in there as well.

So with buffering solved, and player errors solved, what would be a quick win to keep them on site? Cause at this point I think even a popup offering them money would not be enough.

I understand, the buffering issue was a big one, if it happens to everyone else then that would of been a big cause of bounce rate. If you've just fixed it now, that should help a lot over the coming days.

If you don't know what the actual posts look like that drive your traffic, then that's a big concern. There is no way you can analyse the quality of your traffic without seeing what they see. You have to put yourself in the users shoes.

If they are coming via those social media posts, you need to know exactly what is being posted. Otherwise you could be missing a big piece of the puzzle and forever wondering what your doing wrong. Driving traffic is a big part of movie websites.

Tell your marketing team to screenshot some recent posts and send them over to you with analytics. I assume you will be using Facebook as a driving method.

Thats not me.

127.0.0.1 is a loopback ip, so probably just part of hotjar. It's basically serverside action rather than a user.

I've only tested on my phone, which I assume a majority of your traffic is from?
