Why does google rank duplicated content?

I got a few health niche site that are info type, similar to webmd.

I did a search on a very long phrase on webmd to see if there's duplicates, and found lots of exact match results.

I hadn't done this test on other type of sites, but i know source news type can be copied in exact and google doesn't penalize it.

So what does this say? I can just copy them off? Hmm...

Duplicate content still works but it can be removed. Most people
get penalized with duplicate content on one website that they own.
Let's face it Matt Cutts is not the hot sh*t he thinks he is.
 
That's preposterous! How about you focus on learning and not comment on topics you know nothing about.

I do a ton of curation on my blog and my curated posts rank higher than the source about 95% of the time because of my links haha. You have to add at least 50 words of your own view on the topic and a link back to the source's website and I think the algo understands :P

That's what i thought too, just link it back to the source and perhaps that will not trigger a penalty.
 
Google do not hate content syndication !!! Content syndication do create duplicate content but yet people are making tons of $$ with content syndication !!!
 
There was a very interesting piece on this written by Google's Daniel Peng and Frank Dabek - http://cdn.dejanseo.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/peng.pdf.

It is very technical so I will summarize for those who aren't interested in reading. When Google sees duplicate content, it ranks the one with the highest PR first (not the original because it can't actually know which is the original). Not only does it do this, but it takes all of the links to other copies of the duplicate content and GIVES them to the one with the highest PR!

Were this true then e-commerce would be giving a lot of juice to Amazon... because of product write-ups.

He got a msg from google about duplicate content though. I just googled G's take on syndication vs duplicate content "However, it is helpful to ensure that each site on which your content is syndicated includes a link back to your original article"

I still need to test if highest PR ranking is true. But imo it's a really dumb way to rank a site. If most of the syndicated content points it back to the source URL, it should rank the source because it's the original .. HELLO?! G, what were you thinking?

Well, google do ask the source to advice syndicators to no-index that piece of content, but how many syndicators will do that?
 
they want people to be sharing information that is why they rank your site higher than the source.
 
I like to see properly informed people speaking on this subject.

Exact cut and paste articles without a link back can rank higher than the original with a massive linking drive but it will be short lived. Curation on the other hand it what all the top bloggers are doing. Yes it can be as simple as adding a few paragraphs of your own but if include over 50% your own content and use complementing content from more than one other site the post will instantly seem authoritative and will rank with only a few quality backlinks.
