i am trying to rank a local search. in my webmaster tools, search queries, positions, it shows i am #1-#5 for some keywords. i go to google and see i am nowhere to be found even in the map. whats up with that?

this may sound stupid, but are you in the same location as the area your trying to rank for? Google displays results based on the users location. Eg, if someone is based in Derby, Google will display companies from Derby.

it's related to place, where you are searching from, so different positions for different locations.

yes, i search from the same zip code where i try to rank.
i am not sure about local version, but i always get the same few sites that are definitely local. they are who i am trying to beat.

it seems that my google.com search always default to local?

Google lies to everyone OP, nothing new there. They said one there the "white knight" and "play nice" then they do the opposite. Point made:)

Use webmaster tools to get an idea on your average rankings over a period of time. If you ranked 10th on a date and 50th on another, you will have google report your average position as 30th which would obviously not be the case when you search for it.

Use the keyword checker and search results vary from place to place

I would only treat that SERP ranking in Google Webmaster (Now called Console) as an average. Your Organic and SERP rankings fluctuate constantly, so try some other third party trackers that might give you more up to date SERP Rankings reports.

1. SERPFox.com
2. SEO Book Firefox addon <-- be careful and increase the delay between querys to avoid the getting captcha'd.

...what google is trying to do is to get us all away from trying to rank rank rank and focus on making our content useful to searchers.
...take a break from constantly monitoring your rankings and put your focus on your content (for organic rankings). Doing that will eventually give you the rankings you're looking for.

Man, it may show you for your cookies, so check with rank tracker for real result.

many of you talk about average. however, from the beginning, i have been seeing those rankings, while seeing nothing at all on my own search. how do you average #1 while the few times i checked turned out nothing?

This is called personalized search. Google rank you depends on what you Google+ and your location and many other factors.
