why does a pr6 site have no back links?

I would try a fake pagerank checker. Sometimes site owners will do redirects to make it look as if a site has PR. If it is accurate then I'm really not sure. A PR6 should certainly have some type of linking activity.

It could be that the back links haven't been crawled/spidered yet by these sites. Try link:www.sitename.com and see if it throws up any results.

If you read the actual PageRank algorithm, it's a page with a link that matters, not necessarily from a different website.
Therefore a site with little or no backlinks but a lot of pages could have a high PR.

thanks for the replies, the tool told me to check manually, the cache is from 6 days ago and is the same site as now. when i did a links: in google it has about 14,000 links. Majority of it looks like its been blasted, is that enough to get a pr of 6?
surely that isn't right? what would determine if your content was worthy of generating high page rank like that?

So if i publish my MSc dissertation on a blog, I will get pr9? I got a good mark and its 200% unique
How on earth can they "audit" your content and give you high pr for it? based on what you are saying why are you selling seo services?
To the OP: they have exprired domains?

it is really oldschool, and will definitely not show a lot of links but at least some, if there are any
type in google: "link:the url you want to see" and then google will show links to it (but only a few)

To be honest nobody exactly knows.
If you get an insurance domain with 10k backlinks with anchor "free insurance quotes)(expired) and build a dating website and connect it to a network...Then I dont see why the new website would be a high authority(value or whatever) link while relying on its history only.
People say that some domains lose pr and value and some dont(hit and miss ) but you still need to reduce this risk by using Whois privacy and building the new website in the same niche as the old one.
Take the domain you are trying to see whats going on and go to :

I obtained an old domain name from a pretty famous tech brand, the website i obtained was a subsidiary that went out of business
the website still has links from a very big well known super big tech brand to it and also the links about this subsidiary on wikipedia are still there...
i started a little blog on it, about something totally differen and i got like three times as many visitors as blogs whithout backlinks (a lot of traffic from the tech site and wikipedia) the only big problem is that traffic that comes in this way will have a huge bounce rate because it is not what they were expecting

I own a pr6 four letter domain. It has almost no backlinks and no special content (but I do add unique content) and it has managed to hold it pr for whatever reason. I do build backlinks to it on occasion but not by the 1000's. I have no idea why this is but it works for me.
